How long have you been connected to ROCovery?
I've been connected to ROCovery since before ROCovery had its name. It's humbling to look back and see how far it's come. What began as a simple conversation among friends outside a church on a cold winter day; wondering what recovery could look like beyond coffee shops and meetings, has become a community that has touched thousands of lives.
What does ROCovery mean to you?
That's a hard question and I don't know if I can answer. It's like asking someone to pick out the most influential moment of the past 12 years. ROCovery feels like your 'home' when your first relationship in sobriety fails; it's the familiar burning sensation in your calf muscles after finishing your first race up a mountain with a rucksack, reminding you that the grit and dirt, and the salt, is what you're made of - you just forgot for a little while. It's the memory of Patrick, calling to say, 'Sean and Yana picked out the logo', and me thinking "pink and green are weird together", and now that being the single most cherished shirt I own.
Why do you think someone should donate to ROCovery?
I can't speak for everyone, but I was a high school and collegiate athlete. Sports gave me purpose, identity, and a reason to push myself. Somewhere in addiction, I lost that. I lost my drive, my direction, and the part of me that wanted to go all in on life. Because ROCovery was given a home and the support to grow, that feeling was resurrected. I found myself surrounded by people with grit, strength, and a willingness to show up for life again. Not just in meetings, coffee shops, or book studies, but on trails, mountains, races, and adventures. We chased challenges. We climbed things. We got lost. We laughed. We found our salt and sweat again. That's what happens when people invest in recovery. They aren't just helping someone stay aliveβthey're helping people come back to life. Every donation is a vote of confidence that every life has value, that every person deserves the chance to rediscover their purpose, and that recovery can be more than survival. It can be joy, connection, and fire.
Why are you doing the Run/Walk?
Because it keeps me rooted. It's a reminder of where I/we started and how far we've come.
Every year I show up, if i can; and each year the crowd is bigger. It feels a little like Thanksgiving; a reunion with a piece of my life and with people who helped build it (some who are only there in spirit). It's a time to give thanks.
What part of the Run/Walk are you doing?
I'm doing the hard one. I regret it every year. Then at the end, I'll say, "still got it". But let's be honest, we do it for the t-shirt anyway π
