Please watch their paws!

Excessive heat is expected across San Diego over the next few days — please take extra precautions to protect your pets!

When it’s 77 degrees outside, asphalt can reach a scorching 125 degrees. That kind of heat can quickly cause pain and injury to your pet’s paws. Before heading out for a walk, place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it feels too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet.

You can find more heat safety tips, including resources to share with your community, at https://sdhumane.org/resources/pet-heat-safety/.

So true!! Love that about them!

Cats Have Spent 4,000 Years Sitting on Their Humans

Ancient Egyptian objects offer the clearest evidence: cats have never had any regard for personal space. Two little statues depict one cat seated and another standing directly atop reclining human figures, one settled on the chest, the other positioned on the torso as though it owns the spot. These aren't contemporary memes. They're genuine artifacts, around 4,000 years old.

The post featuring them captured it perfectly, quipping that cats have been “bordering their humans” for thousands of years. No limits, no embarrassment, only unfiltered feline entitlement. The humor needs little help, but the historical evidence supports it. It fits everything we already understand about cats in ancient Egypt.

In that era, cats weren't simply pest catchers; they were companions, markers of status, and even sacred animals. Tomb artwork often depicts them beneath chairs, nestled in laps, and threading through everyday scenes. The goddess Bastet appeared as a cat or a woman with a cat's head. Families showed their pets genuine affection, sometimes extending to elaborate burials.

These statues, however, go beyond symbolism alone. A cat actually seated on someone seems less like official iconography and more like an ancient take on “get off my face while I'm trying to sleep.” A cat resting on your breastbone hardly feels ceremonial. Across four millennia, the scene remains strangely, comically familiar.

Today's cat owners recognize it immediately. The reaction was all recognition: dawn wake-up calls, backsides parked in faces, and the shared experience of a cat treating your body as its own furniture. Four millennia,

Awesome!

Salt Lake City has a “Cat Park” — and it just got a major makeover.
Tucked away in Rose Park, Joseph F. Steenblik Park has become one of the city’s more unusual neighborhood landmarks thanks to the oversized bronze cat sculptures that have watched over the park for years.
After a $750,000 renovation, the park is officially open again with a refreshed playground, more seating, additional trees and landscaping, and a new shade structure — while keeping the famous cats that made the park recognizable in the first place.
The sculptures are known as the “Dairy Cats” and were created by local artist Day Christensen as a nod to the history of Steenblik Dairy, which once operated in the Rose Park area.
The park itself is named after Joseph F. Steenblik, who helped shape several community spaces in Rose Park. Today, the little neighborhood park has turned into one of those uniquely Salt Lake City places that people either grew up knowing about — or had absolutely no idea existed.

So now we have to ask…
