Harp seal Jasper shows us he’s ready for release by “hunting” for his herring and capelin!

NYMRC biologists hide behind the wall of Jasper’s pool and throw his fish in to ensure that Jasper does not relate humans with food! This is especially important for seals as sea are protected species and feeding or any activity that occurs within 150ft from a seal or causes behavior change is ILLEGAL!

Help to protect the seals that call our beaches home by maintaining a safe distance and NEVER feeding them! Call the NYS hotline if the animal’s behavior appears concerning at (631)369-9829

Catch up with NY6681-26! This male harp seal was responded to in Southampton, New York back in March 2026! NYMRC biologists received reports of this animal eating sand, a dangerous behavior in harp seals. After intake, biologists found evidence of a parasitic infection. Biologists have treated the infection, and this animal is no longer on any medication and is waiting for release!
