National Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration in the United States observed from September 15 to October 15. It recognizes and honors the history, culture, achievements, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Earlier this month, Martha & other SJI staff attended and tabled at Suffolk Community College for a National Hispanic Heritage event.

Last week our team at Sound-Justice Initiative participated in a few panels and discussions regarding Reentry from Incarceration.

At one event, hosted by the Suffolk County Multicultural Advisory Committee, Michael Miano, our Youth Counselor, shared his re-entry experience after serving time in prison as a young man. Our Director, Dr. Kerry Spooner led a panel of those engaged in providing services of re-entry in Suffolk County.

This week we take all that shared wisdom and seek to apply it.

From the start, Sound Justice Initiative has led me to the most inspiring people, those who possess the combination of vision and grit. It’s because of them that SJI is where it is today, their support and encouragement are essential components.

Yesterday, September 3rd, our Senior Re-Entry Social Worker, Veronica Carrier, was present at the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office Prevention and Re-Entry Task Force meeting.

The meeting focused on expanding employment and identification opportunities, developing prevention efforts around the school-to-prison pipeline, connecting justice-involved individuals to health services, and advocating against the criminalization of homelessness.

Focusing on these four areas promotes SOUND JUSTICE by shifting the legal system from a reactive, punitive model to a proactive, rehabilitative framework.
