WATCH OUT FOR MUSHROOMS AFTER THE RAIN!

These recent rains have brought more than puddles to Las Cruces and mushrooms are popping up in yards, parks, and grassy areas, and some can be toxic to your pets.

Mushrooms can appear very quickly, sometimes overnight, after warm, wet weather. One mushroom currently being reported around Las Cruces is the false parasol (Chlorophyllum molybdites), which can cause significant illness if eaten.

If your dog eats a wild mushroom, don't wait to see what happens. Mushroom identification can be extremely difficult, and some toxic mushrooms can cause serious problems before you realize your pet is sick.

Signs of mushroom poisoning can include:

• Vomiting
• Diarrhea — sometimes severe or bloody
• Abdominal pain
• Excessive drooling
• Weakness or lethargy
• Loss of coordination or disorientation
• Tremors or seizures
• Dehydration

Depending on the mushroom, toxins can also cause liver or kidney damage and, in severe cases, can be life-threatening. Some mushrooms cause symptoms within minutes to a few hours, while others may take much longer to show signs.

Don't allow your pet to sniff, lick, or eat wild mushrooms.

If you think your pet has eaten a wild mushroom, contact your veterinarian immediately. DO NOT wait for symptoms to appear. If possible, safely bring a sample or take clear photos of the mushroom to help with identification.
