Rio Rancho Public School was founded in 1994. We have over 15,500 students and 21 schools. Rio Rancho Public Schools was founded in 1994.
We have just over 17,000 students and 20 schools--one preschool, 10 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 2 high schools, 1 alternative high school and a Cyber Academy and an online-learning option called SpaRRk Academy. Rio Rancho Public Schools is dedicated to graduating each student with an educational foundation for success as a responsible, ethical contributor to society. Shout-out to Megan Quam-Darnell, a fourth-grade teacher at Enchanted Hills Elementary! 👏
As Enchanted Hills Elementary Native American Liaison and Native American Club leader, Megan creates opportunities for students to connect with their culture, community and one another. A member of Zuni Pueblo, she brings her own experiences and passion for learning to this work.
After discovering the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center’s Indigenous Wisdom curriculum through school field trips, Megan began using it with the club and later in her classroom to explore New Mexico geography, Pueblo history and culture, and empathy. That learning also inspired a student art installation at EHE, bringing culture, curriculum and creativity together in the spirit of the school’s arts-integration approach. 🎨
The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center recently highlighted Megan’s work, and we’re proud to celebrate the care she puts into helping students feel seen and connected. Thank you for all you do, Megan!

Ernest Stapleton celebrated Literacy Week with words, creativity and fun! 📚✨
Families came out for Literacy Night on Thursday, exploring activities in classrooms throughout the school. Friday, students ended the week by bringing words to life at the annual Vocabulary Parade. Each student picked a word, dressing up to represent it and parading around the school.
What a wonderful way to celebrate reading and the power of words!

We are excited to share that Shining Stars Preschool has additional openings for 3-year-old students in their half-day, mixed-age classrooms! Children must have turned 3 years old by September 1, 2026, and families must complete an application to be considered for enrollment.

Independence High School celebrated a major construction milestone today with its official “topping out” ceremony, marking the placement of the final structural beam at the new IHS facility!
As part of the celebration, district staff and our construction partners had the opportunity to sign the final beam before watching it be lifted into place, bringing Independence students, staff, and our community one step closer to the opening of their new school.
A huge thank you to Franken Construction, SMPC Architects, and McClain + Yu for the incredible work and dedication they have put into bringing this new facility to life. Most importantly, thank you to the Rio Rancho community for making this project possible through your continued support of our schools and students.
There is much more to come as the new Independence High School continues to take shape. Stay tuned for more updates as we move closer to the grand opening in the Fall of 2027!

Dr. Dodd will share more about the work happening across RRPS, the progress our schools are making, and the district’s priorities as we look to the future.

RRPS celebrated Colinas del Norte Elementary this morning during a press conference highlighting the substantial gains and growth seen across the district in the latest NMPED NM Vistas report!
Fifth grader River Sanchez, a student in CDN’s accelerated math program, opened the event, followed by remarks from Pedro Rico, a parent of a CDN 4th grader, Principal Emily Key, Superintendent Dr. Robert W. Dodd and Board of Education Vice President Seth Muller.
There was plenty to celebrate: Colinas del Norte recorded the highest English Language Arts growth and second-highest math growth statewide among medium-sized schools, with proficiency increasing 13.7 percentage points in ELA and 12.2 points in math. Science proficiency also increased 12 points.
These results are part of encouraging growth happening across RRPS and reflect the hard work of our students, staff and families.
Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning, including members of our local media! KOB, KOAT, KRQE, and the Rio Rancho Observer were on site during the press conference, so tune in tonight and tomorrow to see coverage of the celebration!

The RRPS Hall of Honor recognizes individuals and organizations whose extraordinary service has made a lasting impact on the children of Rio Rancho and Rio Rancho Public Schools. Selection to the Hall of Honor is the highest recognition bestowed by the RRPS Board of Education.
Former school board members, community members and businesses, former RRPS staff members, government officials, and school district volunteers are all eligible to be nominated.

Vista Grande Elementary celebrated the cultures and traditions that make its school community special this week with two days of heritage celebrations!
On Wednesday, VGE hosted its Heritage Night, bringing students, families and staff together to learn about cultures represented throughout the school community. The evening featured displays highlighting traditions from around the world, cultural foods to sample, and a special performance from a Turkish dance troupe.
The celebration continued today with VGE’s Heritage Parade, as students and staff proudly dressed in cultural attire and paraded through the hallways while their fellow Grizzlies cheered them on.
At Vista Grande, the many cultures, traditions and backgrounds represented by students and families are an important part of what makes the school community who they are. We love seeing our VGE Grizzlies come together to share, learn about and celebrate the heritage that makes their community so special!

Rio Rancho Cyber Academy had a very special guest to help them celebrate their Spotlight Status designation, which was recently given to the school by the New Mexico Public Education Department: Orbit from the Albuquerque Isotopes!
Orbit stopped by to give high fives to students and staff, and congratulate everyone for their hard work to remain a Spotlight school.
Congratulations to RRCA for this outstanding achievement!
And a big thank you to Orbit and the Albuquerque Isotopes for helping make this celebration extra special for our students and staff!
The CNM Central New Mexico Community College Transportation Systems Technology Center is in full swing on the RioTECH campus, and RRPS students are thriving in the program! Students have access to hand-on and industry recognized training in a wide variety of automotive-related fields, including general auto, electric vehicle, and light-duty diesel technology. Those who go through the full program will graduate high school with industry certifications and college credit.
We spoke with Mr. O at RioTECH's auto center, who gave us some insight into what RRPS students do on a daily basis.
RRPS is the go-to district in New Mexico for career technical education!
