Students had a blast at the Rio Rancho Student Police Academy this week hosted by our Rio Rancho School Resource Officers. A special thanks to Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office for landing a helicopter at the police headquarters, and Rio Rancho Fire Rescue for their awesome activities at the Fire Station!

Rio Rancho Police Department Citizens Police Academy from August 11, 2026 - October 13, 2026. Presentations by SWAT, K-9, Criminal Investigations, Crisis Intervention Team, Quality of Life and many more. On June 15, 2026, the Rio Rancho Police Department will deploy three (3) additional mobile speed camera units dedicated for use exclusively along State-maintained road N.M. 528 with a red color design.

One unit will initially be located near the intersection of N.M. 528 and Pasilla Road and then rotated to different locations between Iris Road and Idalia Road. The other units will rotate to different locations on N.M. 528 between Westside Blvd. to 19th Ave. SE and Sara Road to Zenith Court.

The enforcement speed threshold for issuance of a $100 citation will be 11mph over the posted speed limit. These are same parameters for the 10 mobile speed camera units currently in use throughout the City that are rotated to different locations along local roadways (e.g., residential, arterial, collector).

The Rio Rancho Police department along with some of our brothers from the Albuquerque Police Department and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office visited Covenant School Rio Rancho for a Law Enforcement Appreciation Reception. Officers read books to children, got to show off their cruisers, and answered questions. We truly appreciate the warm welcome from the staff and students. It was a meaningful and memorable event 💙👮🏻‍♀️

Thank you to everyone who participated in this years Special Olympics Torch Run. It was a huge team effort from our wonderful organizers to the support staff and traffic officers keeping everyone safe. Hats off to everyone involved and the runners who gave it their all.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is this Friday May 29, 2026. The torch is scheduled to enter Rio Rancho at 12:45pm from NM-528 and Sheriff’s Posse Road. The torch will be transferred to Rio Rancho Police at their headquarters at approximately 1:15pm. There will be heavy traffic as Officers carry the torch through Rio Rancho to Albuquerque along NM-528. Come show your support as Officers run for the Special Olympics.

Each year, the Special Olympics torch is carried across the State of New Mexico by law enforcement agencies throughout the State participating in the event. The torch is passed from department to department, with all routes concluding in Albuquerque to symbolize the opening of the Special Olympics New Mexico Games. The portion through Rio Rancho represents the Rio Rancho Rockets Special Olympics team.
