Amy Anderton, Director of World Languages, is applying for a grant to establish a "partial immersion program" in German at one of North Dallas' public elementary schools. Hello! I hope this email finds you well. I’m Amy Anderton, the Director of World Languages in Dallas ISD (and a former German teacher for many years). I was wondering if you could help me. I’m trying to get a federal grant to pay for a teacher position and materials, to begin a “Partial Immersion Program” in German at one of the north Dallas elementary schools in Dallas ISD next year (Fall 2019). I don’t know if it will get accepted or not, but I’m going to try. This program would be completely free to all participants and their families. It’s public school.

While there are many models of Partial Immersion, the one I’m looking at would basically mean that two of the core subjects (probably Social Studies and Science, since these are not state tested until students are older), will be taught 100% in German, and the other core subjects (Reading/Language Arts and Math) would be taught in English, as usual. Two teachers (one German-speaking and one English-speaking) would each have a “home room” and would switch students half way through the day, so that all students in those two home rooms would have both teachers each day, when non-program students would only have one teacher for all four core subjects (in English).

If there is enough interest, and if this program will bring in students who would not otherwise be attending a Dallas ISD public school (either because they would attend private or charter schools, or they do not live within the Dallas ISD boundary), I have a strong case to start the program and receive the grant funds. HOWEVER, I need to show interest and apply for the grant VERY SOON.

(I don’t really need to hear from parents who are not interested at all, but I do need some good statistics to show there are enough people out there who are).
