When most people hear "self defense," they picture a fighting technique or learning how to use a weapon. Threat detection and mitigation is so much more than that.

​First off, the best self defense situation is the one you are never in. What I teach doesn't just deal with physical attacks. It helps you identify a safety hazard before it becomes a problem, all while increasing your ability to read and communicate with both animals and humans.

​We know that sometimes, no matter what you do, you still might end up in a situation where you have to defend yourself or someone you care about.

That’s why we teach how to use your body's natural mechanics to strike harder, faster, and more effectively, and how to use tools, both environmental and standard self defense, to stop an attack.

​I even wrote a bestseller on the subject: Defense against Frogs, Dogs, and Humans (and everything in between).

Many people either cannot carry a traditional self defense tool at work or do not feel comfortable carrying a fi***rm or other lethal weapon and that is exactly where the standard fire extinguisher comes in. They are found in almost every business, school and public building. They are ready to serve an entirely different purpose when seconds count. Being sprayed in the face with a mixture of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and ammonium sulfate which are the primary active ingredients found in standard ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers will cause immediate and intense physical discomfort. While these chemicals are generally considered to have low acute toxicity and are not inherently corrosive like strong acids or bases they act as severe mechanical and chemical irritants to mucous membranes. The fine chemical dust causes rapid stinging severe burning redness and heavy tearing in the eyes. Because the spray consists of fine powder particles blinking can trap the dust behind the eyelids leading to painful surface scratches known as corneal abrasions. Swelling involuntary blinking and heavy tearing will make it very difficult to keep the eyes open effectively causing temporary blindness while the chemical is present. Inhaling the pressurized powder triggers an immediate coughing fit a burning sensation in the nose and throat and a choking feeling in the lungs and respiratory tract. The lungs react by tightening causing shortness of breath and chest tightness alongside a risk of delayed chemical irritation in deep lung tissue that can potentially lead to fluid accumulation or pulmonary edema in severe cases. For anyone with asthma emphysema or bronchitis exposure can instantly trigger a severe respiratory attack.

Even the small one pound RV extinguisher can spray about 13-15 feet for 8 to 10 seconds and is solid enough to be used as an impact tool capable of breaking the collarbone and causing other blunt force trauma.

You are worth fighting for, and sometimes that means you don't have to be nice!
Remember, space is your friend. It increases your reaction time and helps you maintain boundaries and barriers.

If you treat everyone you come in contact with as though they are facing a major personal trial, such as having just visited a close loved one in the hospital in critical condition or having said goodbye to a pet that has always been by their side, you will not go wrong in the vast majority of your interactions.
Please remember that most wounds are not as visible as a cast and most trials are not as noticeable as a student driver sign on the back of a car.

Approaching others with this baseline of empathy directly enhances your personal safety by the way you approach others thus reducing potential conflict before it ever has a chance to ignite. When you recognize that "hurt people hurt people", you begin to see hostility, impatience, or aggression not as a personal attack against you, but as a byproduct of someone else's internal turmoil and pain. Understanding this dynamic gives you the crucial ego check needed to respond with calmness, strategic space, and clear composure rather than returning anger with anger. By replacing defensiveness with awareness, you protect your physical safety by defusing volatile situations and guard your peace of mind by choosing not to inherit bitterness that was never yours to carry.
