It’s National Cucumber Day—crisp, cool and perfectly in season.!
Cucumbers are a summer favorite, and here at the University of Nevada, Reno, they’re part of a broader harvest rooted in hands-on learning and sustainable, organic production. From trellising to harvest, each step reflects training that supports Nevada’s next generation of farmers.
As summer produce comes into peak season, it's a great time to enjoy fresh produce in salads, snacks and seasonal dishes.
This season, support Nevada’s small farmers at farm stands, farmers markets and community-supported agriculture programs. Fresh food starts close to home.

We’re thrilled to highlight Brielle, one of our summer farm crew members!
She is a third-year student at the University pursuing a degree in environmental science. Since joining our team this spring, Brielle has quickly become a valued part of daily farm operations. This fall, she will continue her journey with us through our organic vegetable production academic internship.
“I especially value opportunities that involve outdoor, physically active work. I am eager to build skills in planting, irrigation management, harvesting and pest management,” Brielle shared.
Brielle also shared that she has greatly enjoyed her experience so far, with her favorite part being the opportunity to participate in the full crop production cycle. From seeding and transplanting to harvest and crop termination, she has gained a deeper understanding of the work that goes into producing food in Nevada.
Her enthusiasm for learning, strong work ethic and positive attitude have made a lasting impression on our team. Whether working in the field, assisting with harvests or supporting day-to-day farm activities, she is always eager to take on new challenges and build new skills.
We’re grateful to have Brielle on our team and look forward to supporting her continued growth this fall.

Rain didn’t stop the connection—and it definitely didn’t stop the learning!
Last week our Indigenous Food Sovereignty Program hosted a guided evening hike at Hunter’s Creek in collaboration with Trash Panda Permaculture and Nevada Urban Indians, highlighting edible and culturally significant plants along Northern Nevada trails.
Despite the weather, 16 attendees showed up ready to learn, connect and spend time on the land—and were rewarded with a stunning double rainbow.
Participants explored local plant identification, traditional ecological knowledge and the importance of food sovereignty through hands-on learning in the field. The event created space for connection to land, community and regional food systems in a meaningful way.
Thank you to everyone who joined and supported this event!

This National Grape Day, we’re excited to highlight Lisa Stillings and the impactful work happening through our Nevada viticulture research partnership.
Since 2021, we have partnered with the Nevada Grape Growers & Winemakers to support and strengthen Nevada’s growing wine grape industry. Building on more than 25 years of University wine grape trials, grower experience and regional viticulture expertise, this collaboration is helping advance the future of grape production in Nevada’s changing climate.
As Vineyard Research Coordinator, Lisa plays an important role in this work through vineyard research, grower support and industry collaboration. Current efforts focus on understanding commercial wine grape production potential in Nevada while addressing challenges such as frost protection, pests and disease management. The partnership also provides practical guidance for growers on site selection, vineyard monitoring and grape quality evaluation.
In addition to research, the collaboration hosts winemaking and tasting events that celebrate Nevada-grown grapes while supporting continued industry development and education.
We’re grateful for Lisa’s dedication to agricultural research, grower outreach and strengthening Nevada agriculture. Happy National Grape Day!
