Why does physical exercise help those in recovery?

Regular physical activity can act as a healthy stand-in for addictive substances. That's because exercise and drugs of misuse work on similar parts of your brain. They both activate your reward pathway, which triggers the release of feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.

Why do we do what we do? 💪

Any activity that increases the heart rate can reduce stress, which is crucial for recovering individuals because withdrawing from drugs or alcohol can heighten stress. During exercise, some of the chemicals released by the brain (the feel-good endorphins) can help ease stress.

If you or someone you know, is recovering from addiction and needs a healthy outlet, please reach out to us.
