Thanks-filled Thanksgiving
Well, this year we didn’t have turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes or cranberry sauce. On Thanksgiving Day, our little yet growing, Jireh Hill Church, hosted a medical clinic for our community and we were happy to see over 150 people receive love, medical care, and prayer.
We are so thankful to have been a part of bringing five different churches together to serve our community. A medical team of twelve from Cornerstone Church Singapore manned the treatment stations and pharmacy while our local church members served as translators, registration staff, entertainers, cooks, drivers, prayer and care givers. It was a lot of work. There was blood, sweat, and tears, but at the end of the two days we enjoyed a full and happy feeling. If anyone still has Thanksgiving leftovers I’m available.

Permaculture gardens-The Power of a Seed
Seeds planted not long ago have begun to produce, and our Jireh Hill garden is now providing its first greens for our community. Our sports ground has become a training ground for families within our community to learn permaculture gardening. These gardens, with minimal attention, quickly begin to offer a variety of vegetables that can feed a family, and even bring an income. So, for families that have lost, sold, or never had a rice field these small gardens are a wonder.

Seab – Sewing wonder of the world!
Let me introduce Seab, our new and wonderful sewing teacher. She is the single mother of two kids; Vuthy and Kakado. Seab not only has a spectacular smile, but she sews faster than Flash and could put together a three-piece outfit for a caterpillar. She has already sewn over 100 bedlinen sets for our friends at Shalom Valley, as well as countless cushion covers of all shapes and sizes. She has designed several dresses from casual to couture, and is currently working on a variety of handbags. And, no surprise, she will soon have a number of eager students under her wing. Get your orders in!

Fitness… a family affair
Our Sports days are growing in all directions, and have now become a family affair. Our initial focus was simply on bringing sports and ‘healthy habits’ to the local kids in our village, but we are now happy see many fathers and whole families getting involved. We are also so thankful to have found a place that we can consistently call our sports field. Our Jireh Hill church (Robert and Wanda) found a beautiful place that provides a huge space for sports, an area to develop permaculture gardens, and also has a small house that offers a comfortable home for Kim, Sokunthea, and their two kids. It’s wonderful to see how the branches of a dream can grow out in so many directions.

Work Hard! Play Hard!
Well, this is a long time in coming, but it’s because we are still recovering. These guys we work with, live with, eating with…do life with are amazing! And, sometimes you just gotta have a water balloon fight, egg relay, and Cambodian pinjata dance along with some yummy barbeque to celebrate. So, that’s what we did!

Coffee, Course work, and Conversation!
We may just have opened a library serving coffee. Whether it’s Arts Café-Kep or our new partnership in Arts Café-Phnom Penh, we are so happy to see both places being enjoyed as we had hoped. Of course, there is relaxed conversation over coffee, tea, and snacks, but many are also diving into their books, discussing work, school, and business plans, or hosting training sessions. We’ve hung more shelves, and our friends at Chenla University are stocking them with hundreds of new books. Love it! And, Thank you!

Good Work and PLAY ethics
Through the help of a friend, we were able add a wonderful new piece to our Daycare Plus playground. But, you’ve gotta put in a little sweat (a little work) before you can play. So, the kids jumped into action carrying their new ‘equipment’ to the proper place. And then, with ‘work’ done they dove into play mode. Thank you for being a part of helping us to grow this school program for our local kids.

Having friends over for lunch…
Sometimes you head out and sometimes you ask in; not long ago our little Jireh Hill church invited some of our community in for lunch at the Arts Café. We had great conversation, music, laughter, and a few learning moments. Many, if not all, had never experienced a buffet and the possibility of going back to the table of food as often as you like. In Cambodia, the number of single moms and widows is sad to see, but their strength and smiles are inspiring. We love ‘doing life’ in this place, in this community of people. So, it was a great afternoon of friendship, food, and fun. And, if Cambodia is calling, please pick up…. we’d love to have you here.

Grand Opening - Arts Café in the Capital
Open doors…. you sometimes never know what will happen when you say ‘Yes’ and step through. Partnering with our friends at Chenla University has presented the amazing opportunity to establish an Education Resource Center and café. We now have a three-story building in the center of Phnom Penh called Arts Café (the same as our café here in Kep). The first floor is the café which carries our theme honoring Cambodia’s traditional arts and handcrafts as well as every coffee (and tea) flavor. The second floor is dedicated to hosting meetings that inform students on education, internship, work, and outreach opportunities here and abroad as well as training seminars on such topics as research techniques and thesis writing. The last three months have been a whirlwind, but we couldn’t be more excited. Coffee and community building… oh yes and we have chocolate too… what a great combination. Please come and join us! We are OPEN.

Crayfish…. making muddy, fun progress.
As the saying goes; give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Taking this one step further, train a man to manage a fish farm (or a crayfish farm in our case) and he has a self-sustaining business that feeds and grows his community. Crayfish and rice fields are a perfect match…just ask anyone from Louisiana. Thank you for your incredible support and helping us to develop this practical, teachable, self-sustaining, income generating opportunity for our community. Gumbo on the way!

Triple digit smiles!
Recently we had so much fun! With your help and our friends at Chenla University we were able to help coordinate the provision of 100 school supply sets. Backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, and pencil cases went out to the kids of less privileged families who attend the amazing local free school called Jardin des Langues. Eli, Luca and Kalo have sports days here with the kids while I do teacher training courses with their staff. Khmer Hands hosted 128 of Chenla’s first year students who came to celebrate, but even more… they came with a desire to inspire and give back. It was awesome to see one generation pouring into the next.

Rom – The Woodworking Wonder
Among countless other creations, Rom has just completed ten new desks for our local school. Over the last few months, he has made chairs, tables, stools, cabinets, picture frames, and even a podium. With your help we were able to provide a set of tools that has made his work much smoother. While the wood in Cambodia is quite good quality, it often comes in random shapes and sizes. So, Rom carefully cuts, plains, and sands each piece. We are hoping to get him a table saw some time this year, which I know will bring a big smile to his face and a little more ease to his beautiful work. Thank you for helping us to find and develop his craft.
