LEGO was losing $1 million per day… and nearly destroyed itself chasing “innovation.”
By the early 2000s, the company had wandered so far from what made it magical. Video games, clothing, watches, media projects, theme parks, 7,000+ unique parts…
They tried to be everything except the one thing kids loved them for: simple, creative play.
The more complicated the sets became, the more they alienated the very customers that made the brand iconic in the first place.
Then the new CEO asked the question that changed everything:
“What if the problem… is LEGO itself?”
And that’s when the shift happened.
They cut product lines by 30%.
Simplified thousands of specialized bricks.

If I wear Chanel or Prada you associate me with someone in luxury.
If I wear Lululemon or Alo you associate me with someone in fitness.
If I wear Patagonia or Arc’teryx, you associate me with someone who loves the outdoors.
People ask me all the time "How do I create a strong brand?" - it's always about associations. What do people associate when they hear the name of your brand?
If your brand creates zero associations in the customer's mind OR if it creates too many associations where the customers are confused that is a signal that you need to work on crafting your brand's messaging and associations.
An easy way to solve the problem of being associated with too many things is fairly easier. Don't say yes to every podcast, brand deal, networking event, etc. Be mindful of the things that you are associating your brand with.
If you want to build a strong brand... create a few very strong associations that are core to who you are.
