Good News Rescue Mission

At 6'5" with a bold face tattoo and a build that turns heads — Sonny Branum is not who you'd expect to walk into the Good News Rescue Mission.

But that's kind of the point.

After 35 years incarcerated, Sonny came to GNRM through our Bridge Discipleship Program. For the first time in his life, he says, he was fully accepted — tics, tattoos, and all. He found his footing. He found himself.

Now he's back at the Mission every week — not as a resident, but as a mentor. Pouring into the men still in the Program. "I'm called to a life of service," he says.

Meet Bryce.

He came into the Bridge Discipleship Program carrying heavy burdens, but God had bigger plans for him.

His case manager James describes it best — Bryce has grown closer to God than he's ever been, and that's changed everything. His relationship with his family is stronger than it's ever been. He's not just completing a program. He's building something real.

"God and the Men's Program gave him a second chance," James says. "He's excited to start his new life."

This August, Bryce graduates. And we can't wait to celebrate him.

There's a new magazine in the North State — and we couldn't be more excited about it.

HUMAN is a free quarterly print publication telling real stories of hope, healing, and community right here in our backyard. Volunteer Spotlight ✨

Meet Shain Houchens. Shain has been serving the Good News Rescue Mission for 7 years — every Wednesday, rain, shine, or 120-degree summer heat, he and his partner Mike run the food donation route, picking up food from local businesses and delivering it to the Mission.

Ask him what volunteering has given him, and he'll tell you straight: it's given him a new outlook on the homeless community. "They're just people, struggling just like we are."

The weekly Wednesday route is a partnership — Shain and Mike trade off driving, lean on each other as sounding boards, and have turned a weekly shift into something they genuinely look forward to. They'll be the first to tell you it's about having fun and making the work enjoyable, not treating it like a job.
