👟 Shoes and Foot Support: Your Foundation Matters—Every Step of the Way!

Did you know that the shoes you wear affect much more than just your feet?

Proper footwear plays a key role in your balance, posture, and overall movement. Wearing the wrong shoes can contribute to foot pain, knee problems, hip discomfort, and even low back pain.

✅ Start with your purpose
Walking, running, working on your feet all day, or simply looking for everyday comfort? Different activities require different types of shoes, and choosing the right one is the first step toward better movement.

✅ Know your foot type
Everyone's feet are unique:
• Low arches (flat feet) often need more stability and support
• High arches usually benefit from extra cushioning
• Neutral arches do best with balanced support

Not sure what your foot type is? A physical therapist can help assess your foot mechanics and walking pattern.

✅ Fit matters most
A quality shoe won't help if it doesn't fit properly.
• Leave about a thumb's width of space at the toes
• Make sure your heel feels secure
• Avoid pinching, rubbing, or pressure points

💡 Tip: Try shoes on later in the day when your feet are naturally a little swollen for the most accurate fit.

✅ Look for proper support
Choose shoes with:
✔️ A firm heel counter
✔️ Adequate arch support
✔️ A sole that bends at the toes—not the middle

While convenient, flip-flops and overly flexible shoes often don't provide the support your body needs.

✅ Think beyond your feet
Your footwear impacts your knees, hips, and back. The right shoes can help improve alignment, reduce strain, and support healthier movement patterns.

✅ Replace shoes regularly
Even if they still look good, worn-out shoes lose their support over time. Most athletic shoes should be replaced every 300–500 miles or whenever they no longer feel supportive.

👣 When in doubt, get expert guidance.

At Burch Physical Therapy, we evaluate how your feet function as part of your entire movement system. Our team can assess your gait, alignment, and support needs to help you choose the right footwear and keep you moving comfortably and confidently.

Whether you're on your feet all day, staying active, or recovering from an injury, the right support can make all the difference.

💪 Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training

BFR uses a specialized cuff placed on the arm or leg to partially restrict blood flow during exercise. 🩸 This creates a greater training stimulus, allowing muscles to gain strength and size while using much lighter weights than traditional resistance training. 💪

🏥 Here at Burch Physical Therapy, BFR can help patients maintain or rebuild muscle mass, improve strength, and reduce muscle loss during recovery from injury or surgery—especially when heavier loads aren't yet safe or tolerated. By strengthening muscles with less stress on joints and healing tissues. 🦵✨

✅ When applied by a trained professional, BFR offers a safe and effective way to support recovery and help patients return to their daily activities and sports more efficiently. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

💙 BFR training is also beneficial for our non-athletic population, as BFR training can be useful when patients cannot tolerate heavier load/resistance, for patients that are recovering from a total joint replacement and muscle atrophy, making BFR training a safe and effective method to progressively improve strength and muscular endurance. 💪🔄

Exercise needs change over time

As we age, our bodies change—but that doesn’t mean slowing down has to be the only option. Staying active is one of the most powerful ways to maintain independence, reduce pain, and continue doing the things you love.

"A body in motion, stays in motion."

Exercise needs evolve over time. Strength, balance, flexibility, and joint health all require more intentional care. That’s where skilled physical therapy makes a difference.

At Burch Physical Therapy in Redding, California, we provide personalized, one-on-one care designed to meet you where you are—and help you get where you want to go. Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or simply looking to stay strong and steady, our team is here to support your goals every step of the way.

Our approach goes beyond basic exercise. We assess movement patterns, identify limitations, and create targeted plans that adapt as your needs change. Because your health isn’t static—and your care shouldn’t be either.

No matter your age or activity level, it’s never too late to invest in your strength, mobility, and confidence.
