Randolph Middle School Selected as National School to Watch

The National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform is an alliance of education professionals committed to promoting the academic performance and healthy development of students. Through its Schools to Watch program, the Forum has developed criteria for identifying high-performing middle-grades schools. To be considered as a School to Watch, each school must demonstrate that they are meeting and exceeding the following criteria:

Academic excellence: They challenge all students to use their minds well.

Developmental responsiveness: They are sensitive to the unique developmental challenges of early adolescence.

Social equity: They are socially equitable, democratic, and fair. They provide every student with high-quality teachers, resources, learning opportunities, and supports. They keep positive options open for all students.

Organizational structures: They are learning organizations that establish norms, structures, and organizational arrangements to support and sustain their trajectory toward excellence.

Randolph Middle School won and was presented with the National School to Watch award in Washington, DC on June 29. This honor highlights Randolph’s commitment to prepare students to be lifelong learners ready for college, career, and life beyond school

“The criteria for this award is comprehensive and evaluates the academic, structural, and social-emotional components of a high performing middle school. It is a team effort that includes the RMS professional staff who care deeply about our students. The teachers, support staff and the administrative team at RMS never seem to be content with the status quo. We constantly work to improve instruction and programs for our students and families. This resulted in the Schools to Watch evaluation committee scoring RMS as excelling in the four evaluated areas (academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structures). Our award and designation is the result of “the work of many hands” (un opera a molte mani).”

- Dennis Copeland, Randolph Middle School Principal
