To us, ballet is about so much more than the steps.

It’s a place for big imaginations, growing confidence, joyful movement, and the freedom for children to be wonderfully, completely themselves 💕

✨ There’s more happening underneath the sparkly costume than we might realize.

A scarf becomes a cape. A living room becomes a stage. A little dancer becomes Cinderella, a fairy, a rocket ship blasting into space… 🚀🩰 Make-believe is one of the magical parts of childhood—but it’s also so much more than play.

When children step into imaginary worlds, they’re exploring stories and emotions, experimenting with language, imagining another person’s perspective, making creative choices, and discovering how ideas and feelings can be expressed through their bodies.

It’s also one of the reasons imagination is woven so intentionally into the way we teach ballet at Tutu School. ✨

With costume season officially upon us (and costume week coming up later this month 🎃), we’re taking a closer look at the research behind imaginative play, storytelling, dress-up, and why a playful introduction to movement can still be a deeply thoughtful one.

Tah-dah!! The costumes for our Bravo Bash recital are just too SWEET! 🍬✨

This design is especially special, since it references the Sugar Plum Fairy's costume from the NYC Ballet which is worn at the very end of the show.

Members can signup for the recital with your Tutu Teacher or follow the link in our bio. Costumes will be passed out to registered participants in November in your dancer's class.

What can grow from a little pink tutu, a ballet wand, and a whole lot of joy? 🩰✨

For Lilly, it became a love of dance that has lasted more than a decade. We first met her as a tiny dancer at our Tutu School Raleigh Grand Opening in 2015. She spent four years growing with us through ballet classes, Ballet Storytime, Bravo Bash performances, and plenty of bumblebee stretches—and today, she’s a high school freshman who is still dancing, performing, training, and dreaming about how dance might be part of her future.

Lilly’s story is such a beautiful reminder of why those very first ballet experiences matter. We’re not trying to rush little dancers toward what comes next. We’re giving them a joyful place to begin—and sometimes, we’re lucky enough to watch that first spark grow into something pretty incredible. 💕

Back to School means Meet the Teacher - Meet Tutu Teacher Emily! ✨

Emily is a mom to a toddler herself and credits teaching at Tutu School for making her a more creative, present, and curious parent. She is contantly inspired by the imagination of her students.
