🍇 GERMANY vs. NAPA & SONOMA - the vineyard size reality check

You’d think Napa and Sonoma are w**e country giants. They’re big - but Germany plays a different game entirely.

🇩🇪 Germany: ~255,000 acres of vines (103,295 hectares) across 13 w**e regions
🍷 Sonoma County: ~59,000 acres
🍷 Napa County: ~45,000 acres

That means Germany’s vineyard footprint is roughly 4x Sonoma and 5.5x Napa - combined, Sonoma + Napa (~104,000 acres) barely edges out just Germany’s single largest region, Rheinhessen.

But here’s the twist: bigger doesn’t mean bigger farms. Germany’s average vineyard holding is just ~5.9 hectares (14.5 acres) - a patchwork of small family plots built over centuries - versus the larger commercial estates common in Napa.

Scale ≠ story. Germany proves a country can dominate in acreage while still farming like a village.

🍾 Riesling, Spätburgunder, and centuries of monastic w**emaking history vs. California’s cult Cabernet culture - two totally different w**e worlds.

Just wrapped an incredible few days at Riesling Sommer in the Saar 🍇🇩🇪 Tasted 150+ w**es and I think I was the only one repping the States at this event.

Riesling gets slept on back home, but after this trip I’m convinced it’s the most diverse grape variety, period. Bone dry to lusciously sweet, humble village w**es to breathtaking Grand Crus — every glass told a different story. Good for the mind, good for the soul.

Add in a few days winding through the Saar and Mosel valleys — genuinely some of the most beautiful countryside I’ve seen — and this trip is one for the books.

Bittersweet part: so many of the producers I fell in love with aren’t even available in the States. Time to change that. 🍷

I came here to learn. I left with dirt under my fingernails, Riesling on my breath, and a serious problem: I can’t stop thinking about these vines.
This trip took me through the rolling, half-timbered dream that is Alsace - walking the rows at Trimbach in Ribeauvillé (yes, THE Trimbach, purveyors of some of the most age-worthy Riesling on the planet since 1626), out to Domaine Henri Klee, where the vines are trained up terraced hillsides like something out of a fairytale - because, well, there’s a literal castle watching over them - and down to Domaine Ginglinger in Eguisheim, where the same family has been farming these hills organically since 1610. Thirteen generations deep, and their Grand Cru parcels on Eichberg and Pfersigberg are the real deal.

And the timing could not have been wilder. I landed right as harvest kicked off - and this isn’t just “early,” this is the earliest grape harvest ever recorded in Alsace. Growers here are picking about three weeks ahead of where they’d have been just a generation ago. A hot, dry summer with a couple of intense heat spikes pushed the grapes to pack on sugar almost overnight, and with water stress running high across the region, yields are looking tight - smaller berries, more concentrated flavor. Translation for us: less juice, more intensity. The vignerons I talked to are cautiously optimistic - a small vintage, but a promising one.

Standing in those rows, watching pickers work against the clock (literally - some growers needed special permission to start early), I kept thinking about how much of what ends up in your glass is decided months before it’s ever bottled. Sun. Rain. Nerve. Timing.
I’m bringing all of it home. 🏡✈️

Because this was never just a trip - it’s research. I’m building out a lineup of w**e events at Commonwealth Tap centered around everything I tasted, saw, and learned out here: Alsace Rieslings, Pinot Blancs, Gewurztraminers, and the stories behind the label. Harvest is happening RIGHT NOW as I post this!!!
