Employee of the Month: Malaya

Please join us in celebrating Malaya, our Dietary Aide, as Hallmark House’s Employee of the Month!

Although Malaya has only been with us a short time, she has already become such a valued part of our kitchen team. She brings a positive attitude to each day, is always willing to help where she’s needed, and has quickly shown what it means to be a true team player.

When the opportunity came to move from part-time to full-time in order to provide even more support to our residents, Malaya stepped up without hesitation.

We are so grateful for the positivity, dependability, and care she brings to Hallmark House each day.

Congratulations, Malaya! We’re so happy to have you on our team!

🚒🐾 Happy National Fire Pup Day! 🐾🚒

In honor of National Fire Pup Day, we want to send a heartfelt THANK YOU to the amazing firefighters who took the time to visit with our residents!

A special thank-you to the Fern Creek Fire Department for bringing their Fire Pup to visit with us! Our residents loved the smiles, interaction, and special visit.

We also want to thank the Anchorage Fire Department for coming in to provide an important fire safety check, while taking the time to mingle and visit with our residents. Your willingness to connect with everyone and make safety education fun and personal meant so much to us.

We are incredibly grateful for the men and women who serve our community and for the time they dedicate to keeping us safe. Thank you for educating, engaging, and making our residents feel special!

What is coming up next at Hallmark House?

We had such a special time celebrating National Family Day and Good Neighbor Day with our residents, families, friends, and wonderful community!

Our social was filled with smiles, laughter, delicious snacks, and most importantly, meaningful moments together. From sharing stories to enjoying familiar faces, these simple gatherings create opportunities for connection, belonging, and cherished memories.

In memory care, we know that every moment matters. We’re grateful for the families, friends, and neighbors who continue to bring joy, companionship, and love into the lives of our residents.

Here’s to celebrating the people who make our community feel like family!

Sometimes the details disappear before the feeling does.
A person living with dementia may not remember the conversation you had this morning, what you talked about, or even that you visited.
But they may still respond to you with warmth.
They may relax when you sit beside them.
Smile when they hear your voice.
Reach for your hand.
That is because emotional memory can sometimes remain accessible even when other types of memory are affected.
They may not be able to tell you what happened.
But their brain may still recognize that you made them feel safe, loved, or cared for.
So keep talking to them.
Keep visiting.
Keep holding their hand.
Even when they can't remember the moment, the feeling may still matter.

Working at the “cart”wash today! Hallmark and Stroll NoCo collaborated in fundraising for USA Cares, Inc.! Our residents made sure to supervise all the cart washing! (Along with some furry visitors)

Choosing memory care is a big decision, and sometimes the best questions aren't about the building.

When you tour, ask:
“What happens when my loved one is having a difficult day?”
“How do you handle changes in behavior?”
“What does a typical day actually look like?”
“How do you get to know a resident beyond their diagnosis?”
“What happens if their needs change?”
“How do you communicate with families?”
And perhaps the most important one:
“How will you make my loved one feel at home here?”

A beautiful community can make a good first impression.
But you're not choosing a building.

You're choosing the people who will care for someone you love. Take your time. Ask the uncomfortable questions. Pay attention to how they answer, not just what they say.

Sometimes a person living with dementia will resist care from one person and calmly accept the exact same care from someone else.

It can be confusing and it can feel personal.

But dementia can change how a person interprets familiarity, tone, timing, body language, and approach.

Maybe one caregiver approaches more slowly.
Maybe their voice feels more familiar.
Maybe they're offering care at a better moment.
Maybe a relationship of trust has developed over time.

It doesn't necessarily mean one person is doing something wrong.
Sometimes, the difference isn't what we're asking someone to do.

It's how, when, and by whom we're asking.

That is why dementia care requires flexibility. When one approach isn't working, we don't simply push harder.

We try a different way.
