Overlanding Inspiration :: .nirgendwo 🗺️

From 400 metres below sea level to 4,600 metres above. From the Dead Sea, the Sahara and the Lut Desert to the Pamir Mountains, the beaches of West Africa, and the shores of the Middle East. From -11°C to 46°C. From being showered with bullets from a Kalashnikov to being showered with curiosity and kindness. One van, two people. Having tackled the Doodsakker in Angola, the Van Zyl’s Pass in Namibia, the Lut Desert in Iran, and the endless steppe of Kazakhstan, this Mercedes 4x4 has proven itself to be the perfect overlanding vehicle — and it never stopped turning heads along the way. After traveling the length of West Africa all the way down to South Africa, the van earned a well-deserved spa treatment: a new engine with turbo, a new automatic gearbox, and a fresh coat of paint. Three years and countless hours of work later, it was time to set off again — this time heading East. Pretty far East. Australia? Well, that’s the idea at least. Come along for the ride!

1978 Porsche 924 ( ) :: Feature Vehicle

The 1978 Porsche 924 wasn’t exactly built for winter rallying. A design departure for Porsche in the late 1970s, the luxury touring car was built with a front-engine layout, a water-cooled inline-four engine, and an integrated center console. Lightweight construction was a priority, so doors, front wings, and the bonnet were made of aluminum rather than sheet steel. Double wishbone suspension (also known as the Weissach axle) provided lateral grip and improved stability for the 924’s sleek lines. As Porsche had only ever made air-cooled mid- and rear-engine cars to this point, many purists screamed heresy in response to the change. But the Porsche’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show proved successful, clinching the 1978 European Car of the Year award, making it the first sports car to take home the gold. Sometimes it pays off to do something that, in theory, you shouldn’t.

Celebration of Life: Coen Wubbels, Landcruising Adventure (1969-2026) ❤️

Coen Wubbels lived a life defined by curiosity, creativity, and an unwavering belief that the world was meant to be explored—not rushed through. Best known as Landcruising Adventure, Coen and his partner, Karin-Marijke Vis, left the Netherlands in 2003 in a LWB 45-Series Toyota Land Cruiser, setting out on what was meant to be a two-year journey. Instead, it became a way of life and an inspiration to countless travelers worldwide.

While you may (or may not) have met Coen, you likely read about the harrowing BJ45 rebuilds in Bolivia and Kyrgyzstan, over two decades of slow and mindful overland travel, long-distance hikes in Jordan and South Korea, and tales of trail running that continued well after his brain tumor diagnosis. Coen and Karin didn’t have to share these moments of their life with us, but we’re all better for it.

Overlanding Inspiration :: 🗺️

Before the Defender, our travels already revolved around cars. They were regular vehicles, but we often treated them like 4x4s. For years, our vacations were built around road trips, always looking for dirt roads, remote places, and that feeling of going a little beyond the obvious route. Our story started taking shape in 2020, during the pandemic. On one of our weekly outdoor walks, we saw a small truck parked on the street. As a joke, we started imagining what it would be like to turn something like that into a home on wheels, one that could take us around the world. A few months later, the joke had become a real obsession. We decided it was time to turn the dream into an actual plan. The first step was rethinking our careers. I am (Mai) a designer and was already working with small clients outside my full-time job. Lucas had always worked in sales and business development. Together, we realized we had the right skills to start our own agency. For the next five years, we put all our energy into building , our agency, and Noma Expedition, our goal of traveling all the way to Canada. As the business grew, we saved money and kept the bigger plan alive: to buy and transform a vehicle that could become our home, office, and expedition tool. That is how we found our Defender 130. We wanted to build a complete project, something that could support life on the road and take us on our first big adventure: a three-year journey across the Americas. In 2025, we left Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Today, seven months later, we are exploring Bolivia. Along the way, we changed our routine, our needs, and our expectations. We now live on the road, work remotely, and combine the experience of our almost six-year-old agency with a life shaped by travel, content creation, photography, and off-road adventures. It has been an incredible experience to have the privilege of waking up in different places every day and being able to draw our own route on the road. Our Defender gives us geographic freedom while also offering an incredible feeling of home.

El B***o ( ) : The Overland Bug ✨

You may not have noticed, but we have an affinity for older vehicles here at Expedition Portal. We love their simplicity, classic styling, and durable materials, but not nearly as much as we love their personalities. Each one has stories to tell, earned scars, and a character as unique as the people that own them. Just take a look at this 1967 Bug, and you’ll know exactly what we mean. It was purchased by Jamie Wiseman last year with the intention of restoring and flipping it for a profit. What he hadn’t anticipated was falling in love with the old Volkswagen, which would lead him to turn it into a one-of-a-kind overland Bug. #

Feature Vehicle :: Mundo Cão Overland 2000 Land Rover Defender 110 🗺️ - by Ashley Giordano ( Desk To Glory )

Their first trip was a smashing success, so Sergio and Eleni decided to leave Brazil behind, bound for Alaska. They spent the next year working and modifying the Defender to suit long-term travel, including building a marine plywood cabinet for clothes and kitchen items, installing a Waeco CF35 fridge, 70-liter stainless steel water tank, a Sumatra rooftop tent and awning, and a drop-down table on the back door. Other modifications included three Optima batteries, a Ctek D250SA dual-battery charger, solar panels, and a set of BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires that proved themselves for 100,000 kilometers.

Sergio had a set of 2-inch Terrafirma HD coil springs and Big Bore shocks installed to support the load, while a Keko bull bar front bumper, Warn 9000i winch, and Safari snorkel added protection and transformed the look of the Defender into a global overland build. Sergio stresses the importance of a tight budget (which dictated each modification) and sticking to a strict departure date. “It is important to have; otherwise, you will be modifying your car for eternity and not going anywhere.”
