Most of us can look back and think of a relationship that ended awkwardly because of a clumsy apology — or sometimes even a missing apology. It’s easy to understand why this is such a universal experience: apologies are hard. Even when we’re wrong, it’s hard to overcome the feelings of shame and guilt that can make us feel defensive. Many of us want to apologize well, but don’t know how to do go about it. Moments of conflict and carelessness with loved ones are inevitable, but a thoughtful apology can go a long way to protecting and repairing your relationships. A good apology should acknowledge what went wrong, take responsibility without qualification, and offer a repair. The “why-because-and” framework can help reach these targets.
