On Friday evening, Oct. 17, outside the studio window of Anis Mojgani, a crowd of Portlanders gathered to hear his lyrical poetry — leaning into his cadence even more so now as the city holds its breath in a moment of uncertainty. Mojgani is a spoken word poet, visual artist and musician who was Oregon’s 10th Poet Laureate. Appreciators of his work wait for the moment when he posts one of his handmade, collaged posters, letting them know it’s time for another edition of “Poems at Sunset out a Window.” “It’s funny to live in Portland right now and needing to convey and communicate the truth and reality of all of it. Being in this city is a really special gift — we live in a city and a place that is filled with so many people who care about other people… And also being aware of the potential ramifications of what it means to have these choppers flying in the sky every night, to have these vans and automobiles disappearing people who may talk differently than us.” For about an hour, Mojgani spoke about the atmosphere in Portland right now, urging people to take care of one another.
