⚓ CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Help Prepare Harvey Gamage for Discovery Voyages 2026 ⚓
As we move into spring, preparations aboard the schooner Harvey Gamage are ramping up—and we’re inviting our community to be part of it.
Each season, Discovery Voyages provides Maine students with hands-on maritime education and workforce exposure. Before we can welcome students aboard, there is critical vessel work that must be completed—and that effort takes a team.
We are currently seeking volunteers to assist with vessel prep on the following dates:
Key Work Periods:
April 15–17: Shrink wrap removal & initial prep
April 20–22: Rigging the vessel to sail
May 1 onward: Haul out & begin paint work
Special Volunteer Events:
May 9 – Sanding Party (Rain Date: May 10)
May 16 – Painting Party
🕣 Full-day efforts (approx. 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM)
☕ Lunch, coffee, and refreshments provided
🚧 Unique opportunity to work aboard and even operate alongside lift equipment (under supervision)
Scope of Work Includes:
Mechanical servicing (engines, pumps, fuel systems)
Interior and bilge cleaning, sanding, and painting
Varnishing brightwork and deck structures
Systems organization and safety improvements
General vessel prep for USCG inspection and season launch
Whether you’re a seasoned mariner, tradesperson, or simply someone who wants to support experiential education in Maine—we welcome your help.
This is more than maintenance—it’s the foundation that makes our youth programming possible.

Let’s get Harvey Gamage ready to sail—and ready to inspire.
