Today’s blog post was written late, and it’s about why I shoot food for myself. This is not a picture of food, but it is a delicious shot from a favorite shoot with the talented .

“For me, every photograph is a portrait; the clothes are just a vehicle for what I want to say. You're photographing a relationship with the person you're shooting; there's an exchange, and that's what that picture is.”- Peter Lindbergh

Pictures are the memory keepers of images. The heart is the memory keeper of feelings.

Today I’ve blogged the description of a memory that comes to me quite often. I don’t always see the whole scene, but I can feel it.

“This moment would never happen again. This scene, this sunlight, the age of my babies, the way Ben looked as he smoothly maneuvered curves that usually make me woozy. There was no way for me to capture just how magnificent this drive felt. No camera could remember it the way my brain and heart would.”

Happy birthday, Ben! You truly are the best husband, father to our kids, and friend I could ask for. I love you a million times more than I did when we met, and my love continues to grow. Thank you for being my partner, travel companion, personal bread baker, web designer, co-kid wrangler, support system, hottie Mchusband. 17 years of celebrating your birthday together really did fly.

Here’s to many more years of celebrating birthdays together!

Focus and exposure, choosing an aperture, taking a clean photo, understanding light. Those are all necessary things to know as a photographer, but they aren’t the hard part. And they aren’t want make you a good photographer.

Everyone can learn the technical aspects of photography. The hard part, the part that makes you an artist is seeing your subject, interpreting, then showing the capturing the scene or person. Capturing what you see is harder than you might think. And it’s so important.

Don’t have a backup plan. These days, I won’t have one. My goals are the only things I want in life, and I am not willing to create a safety net for myself anymore. Why? Because it’s all or nothing for me. It’s achievement or bust. Everything I do in my life revolves around achieving my one thing. My one thing for my family and my one thing for my craft.
