We get this question a lot: are natural detergents actually better for Oriental rugs? Short answer — usually, yes. As a small, family-run wash plant here in Portland, we hand-wash each fine rug and favor plant-based, biodegradable cleaners whenever possible. Why? Wool and silk are sensitive: harsh surfactants, optical brighteners and strong alkalis can fade dyes, weaken fibers, and leave sticky residue that attracts more dirt.
Enzyme-based and plant-derived formulas clean very well (especially for organic stains) and leave less residue — but they’re not magic. Enzymes must be used carefully so they don’t linger on protein fibers like wool or silk. For heavy grease or stubborn spots we sometimes combine methods or use targeted spot treatments, then neutralize and rinse thoroughly.
Pro tip: always test any cleaner in an inconspicuous spot first and let it dry completely before judging the result. If you’re unsure, bring it by our Portland facility — we hand-wash and repair fine rugs using traditional, rug-specific methods that protect color and fiber. Have a treasured rug that’s seen better days? I get it — rugs bring warmth and personality, but they also trap dirt, allergens, and stains that a vacuum can’t reach. That’s why I trust professional, hand-wash care for fine area rugs. At our Portland facility we use traditional, rug-specific methods (no harsh shortcuts), plus repair services and custom pet-safe pads to protect your investment.
An 8x10 wool rug? We clean it all-inclusive at $4.75/sq ft ($380) — no surprise add-ons. Regular professional cleanings (about every 12–18 months) preserve color, remove embedded grime, and extend lifespan. Questions about your rug’s care or ready to schedule a drop-off? Share a photo or drop a comment — I’m happy to help. 🧼✨
Most rugs stay wet longer than they should. That’s where problems start, key to rug cleaning isn't just cleaning its drying.
At our workshop, we use advanced rug-drying methods specifically designed for fine textiles. One of the key tools we use is a centrifuge extractor. Think of it like the spin cycle on a washing machine, but a high-powered one built for rugs, not clothing.
In just a couple of minutes, we can safely remove up to 90% of the moisture from your rug.
That means faster drying, reduced risk of dye bleed, and a much lower chance of odors or mildew developing.
It’s one of the reasons professional rug washing delivers results you simply can’t get at home and makes us the top-referred rug cleaning in Portland, Oregon by Portland's top rug dealers.

Ever had your rug cleaned and thought, “Why does it still smell?” I get it — I’ve seen it a hundred times. Surface cleaning can leave urine salts, bacteria, and deep soil trapped in the rug foundation. In Portland’s damp weather that smell can come back quick. That’s why we hand-wash and fully immerse rugs in our Portland facility: dusting first, deep flushing to remove contaminants and neutralize urine salts, then careful drying so odors don’t reactivate.
If your rug still smells after an in-home or steam clean, bring it to us (or schedule a pickup) and we’ll inspect it, explain what it needs, and treat it based on its exact fibers and construction. We even handle delicate and specialty pieces with proper care.

Before & After: Turkish Silk Oriental Rug Cleaning
This beautiful Turkish silk Oriental rug came into our Portland rug washing facility heavily soiled from years of use. Fine silk rugs are extremely delicate and require specialized care to avoid fiber damage and color bleeding.
Our team performed a full immersion hand-washing process designed specifically for silk and hand-knotted Oriental rugs. This gentle but thorough cleaning removed embedded soil while protecting the rug’s natural luster and intricate patterns.
The difference between the before and after is dramatic. The colors are brighter, the silk fibers are restored, and the rug once again shows the detailed craftsmanship that makes Turkish silk rugs so special.
If you own a silk rug, Persian rug, or other handmade Oriental rug, professional in-plant cleaning is essential to preserve its beauty and value.

You know the line. “It’s not really dirty… it just needs a quick freshen up.” but then the wash water turns the color of espresso.
Here’s the part most Portland homeowners don’t see: an area rug is basically a dense fiber filter. Every day it traps fine dust, grit, pollen, pet dander, and traffic oils. The fibers grab it, hold it, and keep the surface looking normal long after the rug is heavily soiled.
By the time a rug looks dirty, it’s already overdue for professional cleaning.
In the Pacific Northwest, especially, moisture + indoor living + pets means soils pack deep into the foundation of the rug. Vacuuming removes surface debris, but the embedded grit keeps grinding away at the fibers. That’s what causes fading, dullness, and premature wear.
Professional rug cleaning in Portland doesn’t just improve appearance. It removes the deeply embedded abrasive soil that traps odors and shortens the life of wool and Oriental rugs.
What dirty little secrets is your rug hiding? 🤔

Think twice before placing a potted plant directly on your oriental rug.
It looks harmless. It’s not.
Here’s what’s really happening 👇
When you water your plant, excess water drains into the saucer. That saucer becomes cooler than the surrounding air. Just like condensation forms on a cold drink in summer, moisture starts collecting underneath.
And your rug absorbs it.
🪴 Mold grows where you can’t see it.
That trapped moisture sits between the rug and the floor. No airflow. No evaporation. Over time, it leads to mildew, mold, rot, and serious structural damage.
🪴 Colors can bleed.
Many oriental rugs use natural dyes. Add consistent moisture and those rich reds and deep blues can start to run or fade. Once that happens, it’s permanent.
🪴 Damage builds slowly.
You won’t notice it right away. That’s what makes it dangerous. By the time you lift the plant, the damage is already done.
You don’t have to choose between plants and beautiful rugs. Just be smart about it.
✔️ Use a waterproof tray with a raised edge
✔️ Elevate pots with a sturdy plant stand
✔️ Rotate placement to avoid constant pressure
✔️ Check underneath often for dampness
Two minutes of prevention can save you thousands.
