Oregon Buddhist Temple
Our temple, the oldest in Oregon, follows Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. It is a path oriented toward inclusion, gratitude, and the lives of laypeople.
The Oregon Buddhist Temple (OBT) was founded November 29, 1903 (originally as the Portland Buddhist Church), making us the oldest Buddhist organization in Oregon. Our sangha follows Jodo Shinshu (or Shin) Buddhism, which has been referred to as "blue collar" Buddhism and the practice-less practice. Our sect is non-monastic and geared toward everyday experiences and families. OBT started as a community to service the religious and cultural needs of Portland's Japanese immigrants. While we grew up in the Japanese-American community and are proud of our heritage and traditions, we are happy to be growing and becoming increasingly diverse. OBT welcomes all people, regardless of ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identification, and political or religious affiliation. Our weekly services are typically on Sunday at 10:00 am. Please check our website calendar for service schedule as well as special services and events.

The Oregon Buddhist Women's Association (OBWA) will be selling its tasty fukujinzuke (a popular favorite!) at the Sukiyaki Fall Bazaar on Sunday, Oct. 25, 12pm-3pm.
Fukujinzuke is a Japanese pickle that is both savory and sweet. It is a popular condiment and often served with Japanese curry. Wikipedia says: ‘The name originates from the tale of the Seven Lucky Gods [Shichifukujin]. In homage to the name, some varieties of fukujinzuke consists of seven different kinds of vegetables.' The OBWA version includes: daikon/white radish), Chinese eggplant, Persian cucumber, renkon/lotus root, carrot, konbu/kelp, and sesame seed. It is flavored with red shiso/perilla and ginger.
The Fukujinzuke will be available on a first-come basis, along with other special offerings: inari sushi, zenzai (red bean soup with mochi), baked treats, and more!
Remember to preorder sukiyaki and cabbage tsukemono by Sunday, Oct. 11 since there will only be a limited amount of servings available for walk-ins.

During children’s Dharma message today, Rev. Vonn challenged Dharma school students to tie shoe laces together, using one hand each. And others made observations of what made it work.
You can check Rev. Vonn’s Dharma message for grown ups (regarding … spiders!) on our YouTube channel! 😊🙏
