This week, as part of a unit on astrobiology, extremophiles, and the origin of life, Advanced Biology students took a virtual tour of the E/V Nautilus fisheries research vessel from the Ocean Exploration Trust. From this experience, they learned about eDNA studies, the discovery of new marine species in the deep sea, and how remotely operated vehicles collect invaluable data on the seafloor. Check out the photo of the googly-eyed stubby squid (Rossia pacifica), a real deep-sea animal that looks like a cartoon!

We kicked off the school year by getting right out into downtown to play Wildwood Crow bingo! Students followed a map to as many crows as they could find and took photos to document. They also ran into some of the sasquatches from the Oregon Live Sneaky Sasquatch scavenger hunt. So much great public art to see! We love seeing our students engaging with Portland and learning to be savvy urban citizens. (And how many of these look like awesome band photos?!)
