First growth! Early stages of grapevine development as seen from our backyard “vineyard” ( it’s only five vines), which normally is a few weeks ahead of the vineyards in the valley. Photos show:
1. Woolly bud.
2. Swollen bud.
3. First leaf.
4. Young cane and leaf development.
5. Early stage inflorescence, or the flower bud, which will become a grape cluster.

It’s exciting to see the new growth. This time of year is always a little nerve-racking because once the baby leaves and shoots start to grow they are at extreme risk if we have a frost. Four years ago in 2022 we had a snowstorm this exact week in April which did extreme damage to the crop. Fingers crossed that we are in the clear for harvest 2026!
