Tonight’s the night!

After months of recording, mixing, planning, remembering, and celebrating, we finally get to share Zwyze with you — live, on stage, in community. This concert is a tribute to Adam’s imagination, joy, and the spirit he brought to every note and every friendship.

We can’t wait to see you.

Zwyze: Album Release Concert
Tonight — Monday, November 17, 2025
Alberta Rose Theatre
Doors at 6:00 PM · Show at 7:00 PM

Tonight brings together the full cast of musicians who created Zwyze.

At the center are Neil Mattson (guitar) and Julio Appling (bass), whose musical partnership shaped every piece on the album.

Our three drummers — Tyrone Hendrix, Brent Follis, and Micah Hummel — each bring their unique feel and musical voice to Adam’s compositions, reflecting the variety, energy, and rhythmic imagination at the heart of this project.

On keyboards, Mike Elson adds layers of organ and Rhodes — and while he plays the Juno synth on the record, he may enlist producer Steve Watkins to bring that part to life onstage.

Jake Savage joins on Rhodes with his warm, harmonic sensibility, and Jeff Gordon brings expressive percussion work, including the ceramic drum Adam gave him years ago.

We are also joined by a cello section of Diane Chaplin, Katherine Schultz, Mario Bastea-Forte, and Valdine Ritchie Mishkin whose sound adds a resonant, orchestral richness to the music.

This is a rare gathering — the first time this entire group has shared a stage — a night filled with community, collaboration, and the spirit of Adam himself.

Huge thanks to Regional Arts & Culture Council for their support of this project.

With the Zwyze album release concert just days away, we wanted to share the origin of the name:

Zwyze was a name Adam first claimed in childhood, writing a formal letter to his mother to announce he would no longer need his given name. In high school, it became his Dungeons & Dragons persona — its letters chosen for the highest possible Scrabble score, "maximum XP," as he called it.

Over time, Zwyze transcended any fixed character and came to embody the irrepressible spirit of our friend: an adventurer of limitless vigor, a brilliantly stubborn and staggeringly intelligent debater of matters both cosmically vast and comically minuscule, and a laugher of prodigious decibel levels.
This album is in his honor.

As we’ve worked on this project, we’ve found ourselves reconnecting with Adam’s spirit — his belief in music as a way to bring people together, his joy in every creative moment, and his deep love for life, family, and his friends. We hope the music carries some of that same feeling to you.

We can’t wait to share it with you live on Monday night.

Zwyze would not be complete without Jake Savage (keys on “Trenchant”) and Jeff Gordon (ceramic drum on “New Love”), and the expert work of Slater Swan at Anjuna Recording Studio and Dana White at Specialized Mastering, whose touch gave the final mixes their balance, clarity, and warmth.

This project is a true community effort — a shared act of love and craft built around Adam’s enduring influence.

The Zwyze braintrust also includes:
Thomas Barber — composer, arranger, trumpeter, and educator who has performed with Paul Simon, esperanza spalding, and Brian Blade! He composed a complementary four-cello arrangement for “Couloir.” Thomas has been a longtime friend and supporter of Trio Flux since our early days at the Camellia Lounge, and his contribution gave the piece a beautiful, expansive new dimension.

That cello section featured Diane Chaplin, Katherine Schultz, Mario Bastea-Forte, and Valdine Ritchie Mishkin. Their performance adds a lush, emotional weight to “Couloir” that bridges jazz and chamber textures in a way Adam would have loved, and we're thrilled to have them performing with us on November 17th at The Alberta Rose Theatre, too!

Every great record needs people who can guide the vision, refine the details, and help the music reach its highest potential. For Zwyze, that circle included producer Steve Watkins! Steve is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who has worked closely with Allen Stone and Liv Warfield. He is also a longtime friend of Adam Ochshorn. As our producer, Steve steers the ship, making sure the music stays on course. He brought his artistic vision and deep musicality to every track — offering thoughtful suggestions that made each piece the best it could be. He even rolled up his sleeves in the studio to add subtle textures and effects on “Couloir,” “Snow Crash,” and “Two Ways Out.” His presence was essential in ensuring the project stayed true to our purpose: honoring Adam’s artistry and friendship.

His musicality and sensitivity are matched only by his technical mastery and attention to detail. On Zwyze, Brent’s performances on “Trenchant” and “Snow Crash” bring layers of texture and emotion — a true tribute to Adam’s writing and spirit.

When we thought about who could bring the kind of deep pocket and joyful groove that Adam loved, one name came immediately to mind: Tyrone Hendrix

Tyrone is a powerhouse drummer, composer, and producer who has performed with Stevie Wonder, Prince, Mike Phillips, Liv Warfield, Allen Stone, and Portland Cello Project. He’s one of the most respected and versatile players on the scene, with a feel that’s unmistakable — rooted in soul, gospel, and funk, and grounded in a rhythmic depth and musical empathy that makes every band sound its best.

On Zwyze, Tyrone brings that spirit on “New Love” and “Couloir.” His performances on both tracks radiate warmth, groove, and connection — capturing the essence of what Adam’s music has always been about.

Tyrone will also take the stage in the second set on November 17th with Outer Orbit, Portland’s all-star funk and soul collective. Their set will keep the celebration going at The Alberta Rose Theatre, carrying forward the joy, energy, and community spirit that Adam inspired in all of us.

When we began planning to record Zwyze, we knew we needed someone who could inhabit Adam’s rhythmic world — not just play the notes, but understand the complexity and layers, while having the technique and precision to execute the parts flawlessly.

We found that in Micah Hummel.

Micah is one of the most technically gifted drummers around. His work with George Colligan, Anna Tivel, Jarrod Lawson, and Sama Dams has made him a standout voice in the Pacific Northwest’s jazz and creative music scene. On Zwyze, his performances on “Two Ways Out” and “Far From Here” elevate each piece to new heights.

In Micah, we found a kindred spirit — someone who could bring to life the mixed meters and multi-textured approach that defined Adam’s writing and drumming, while adding his own imagination and energy.

We can’t wait for you to hear it live on November 17th.
