Green Empowerment
Village solutions for global change.
Green Empowerment works with local partners around the world to strengthen communities by delivering renewable energy and safe clean water. We collaborate with Indigenous peoples, rural communities, local organizations - and you - to improve health outcomes, build climate change resilience, advance gender equity and help lift families out of poverty.
What does it take for a high-altitude community in the Peruvian Andes to build reliable water access?
Today we're launching the first chapter of our Project Journey Series, following the community of Cucho Yanaoco in Puno, Peru, as residents, local leaders, and partners work together to strengthen their community-managed water system.
Over the coming months, we'll share stories from the people closest to the work—offering a look at what community-led development looks like in practice.

What happens when communities don't just solve their own water challenges, but help their neighbors do the same?
In Ecuador's Río Cayapas region, 16 communities have joined a growing network, sharing knowledge and building water systems together. In El Tigre, filtered water now flows directly to 29 households and a school. Local leaders run it all. And the system is already designed to grow.
From one community, many ripples. Dive into the stories in our 2025 Annual Report 👉https://greenempowerment.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/GE-AR-20.pdf

“Kids, sit here in front and join us. We want you to understand that everyone is doing this for you, so you don’t have to do your homework in the dark.” - Banie Lasimbung, Founder & Lead Engineer, TONIBUNG - TObpinai NIngkokoton koBUruon kampuNG
This moment from a community meeting in Pokolon Paus, Malaysia, this May said it all. Every voice at the table, every generation represented. The meeting brought together residents, leaders, and yes, the children who stand to benefit most from the work being done. Because when kids understand why decisions are being made, they grow up knowing they matter. And that changes everything.

Pitas Laut takes a step toward climate resilience by switching off diesel generators and switching on a new community-built solar grid. ☀️🔋
Despite high tides and narrow mangrove inlets, local partners TONIBUNG - TObpinai NIngkokoton koBUruon kampuNG and Forever Sabah, and local community leaders brought reliable power to 117 residents. The impact is already growing, including a new ice business started by the Pitas Laut Women’s group to help fishermen preserve their catch.
This pilot is part of the Sabah Renewable Energy Rural Electrification Roadmap (SabahRE2), a consortium-led effort to bring renewable energy to communities across the state of Sabah. Learn more in our Annual Report . 👉https://greenempowerment.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/GE-AR-20.pdf

Please join us in welcoming Miranda to the team this summer!
Miranda is an Environmental Studies and Studio Art major at Lewis & Clark College, bringing a background in digital design and conservation to her work. She's passionate about visual storytelling as a tool for environmental advocacy and engagement, and equally drawn to hands-on field work and environmental education.
We're so excited to have her creativity and passion with us this season.
Welcome to Tamu Day in Kampung Walou! 👋 Market day is held here at the community’s socioeconomic center that also houses their solar PV system. Every 14th of the month, community members gather to sell food, crafts, and local produce. During our visit we enjoyed live music, fresh coffee and breakfast, right at the edge of a protected forest. If you’re ever in Sabah on the fourteenth of the month, we highly recommend dropping by.
This is what energy access can look like: community-built infrastructure that powers livelihoods, energizes local businesses, all while bringing people together.

Last week, we had the privilege of sharing a sanitation technology transfer with our incredible partners — Water Mission, ASOMAINCUPACO, and FEDICAMP.
The enthusiasm and commitment to moving these sanitation projects forward was undeniable. Seeing so much passion for clean, safe sanitation in communities that need it most is exactly why this work matters.
We were also honored to welcome the mayor, who attended the event and was said to have left genuinely impressed by what this collaboration can achieve. That kind of local leadership support means the world for the road ahead. 🙌

What an incredible Spring Benefit 🎉☀️ Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised $107,000! Enough to bring solar water pumping to three communities in Puno, Peru, or power an entire community in Malaysia with a solar mini-grid.
A huge thank you to Claudia Romero Saavedra, our Peru & Bolivia Program Coordinator, for joining us and sharing her incredible work Energía, Ambiente y Sostenibilidad supporting Indigenous Aymara communities across the Andes. 🙏
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate and learn! Check out the photos from the event and see for yourself! 📸👇
