It’s only April but we’ve got snow on our mind … snowbells that is. Styrax is the plant name and Georgia has two native ones, but the Japanese one seems to get most of the horticultural attention. Bigleaf snowbell (Styrax grandifolius) is native throughout the state and is a small tree of 8-12 feet (perfect for small yards). It likes part-sun conditions with good moisture. This is a tree that needs to get more attention in the trade.

Planting to help it grow

Container-grown trees develop circling roots that can girdle the trunk years after planting. The wide shallow hole forces roots to spread outward where oxygen levels stay highest in the first 12 inches of soil. Most tree roots naturally grow in the top 18 inches seeking air and nutrients rather than diving deep. [3UToL]
