Why filing after hail/wind actually matters (and why waiting can cost you):
1. Hidden damage isn’t harmless.
Granule loss, shingle bruising, lifted edges, cracked pipe boots—small issues that become leak paths. Filing now documents storm-date damage before it morphs into “maintenance.”
2. Carriers expect prompt notice.
Most policies require “prompt” or “immediate” reporting; many carriers set internal windows (commonly 6–12 months, policy-dependent). Late notice gives underwriting an easy out.
3. One storm = one deductible.
If you wait, then a new storm finally causes interior leaks, that’s typically a second claim (roof + interior), which often means two deductibles.
4. Prevents the “wear & tear” denial.
When you file while the evidence is fresh, the adjuster can tie it to this storm—not age or lack of maintenance.
5. Code upgrades & scope control.
Timely claims capture required code items (vents, drip edge, valley metal, etc.) and lock scope/pricing before material markets shift post-storm.
6. Mitigation requirement.
Policies require you to protect the home from further damage. Filing + temporary dries (tarping/repairs) show you did your part.
7. Resale & insurability.
A documented, completed claim is easier to explain than mystery stains on a ceiling during inspection.
8. ACV/RCV realities.
If you have RCV, you can recover depreciation after work is completed. Letting the roof age out can move you into ACV-only or “cosmetic” territory on some policies.
