What if the time and energy you spend maintaining your lawn could instead help create a beautiful, productive, and more sustainable landscape? 🍀

Join the McCandless Environmental Advisory Committee for an upcoming workshop on suburban-scale permaculture and ecological restoration. Learn the basics of permaculture design, growing your own food, and choosing plants that support our native ecosystem.

The workshop will be presented by John Creasy, founder of Garfield Community Farm, a three-acre urban farm in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood and a community permaculture site.

🍁 This Saturday, August 15 from 12p - 1:30p (wash pack area)

Starting a Fall Garden Workshop

Join us to learn how to extend your garden season into the fall! We’ll focus on planting a fall garden in the ground or in containers. We’ll chat about growing cool weather crops like collards, kale, carrots, spinach and more, preparing your garden space for the season change, growing in containers, and tips to have a bountiful fall harvest! Each participant will receive a free cool season plant seedling to grow at home.

This free workshop is part of our Gardening Basics Workshop series and one of the ways we support the Garfield Grows Network (GGN), a free informal learning and support network for Garfield growers of all ages and experience levels. Many thanks to the SWPA United Way Community Food Solutions Grant for supporting this workshop and the Garfield Grows Network!

And that’s a wrap!

Last week ended our 2026 Camp Season. We had another wonderful year of play, learning, chickens, harvesting, eating freshly prepared food, and enjoying nature.

AND JUST AS IMPORTANTLY…Increasing youths comfort levels in the natural world! This year:

✨ Over 20% more youth said that they were very comfortable in outdoor spaces from Week 1 to Week 6 🌳

✨ The percentage of youth who said that they didn’t like bugs dropped from 73% to 28% from Week 1 to Week 6 🐞

✨ The percentage of youth who said that they didn’t like plants dropped from 12% to 0% from Week 1 to Week 6 🌱

To all of you who incorporate natural spaces intro your education programming - Keep up the good work!

While learning can happen in stillness, the majority of learning happens in movement. In doing. In sound. In mess.

For this week’s camp post, we decided to do a reel of short videos from today that feature what learning most often looks like on our space.

Shout out to the fab youth of Brothers And Sisters Emerging for braving the rain!
