Is your little one learning their colors? Keep an eye out!

Colorblindness is much more common in young boys and can be hard to detect early. A key sign is difficulty distinguishing between similar shades—most commonly red and green, or blue and yellow. Early vision screenings help identify these differences so educators and parents can adapt learning tools early.

Keep an eye out for strabismus—when one eye looks straight ahead while the other turns inward, outward, upward, or downward. It affects about 4% of children in the U.S., but catching it early makes all the difference.

Ask your pediatrician about a quick preschool vision screening or seek an evaluation if something looks off. Early steps set our little ones up for bright, healthy futures!

Protecting little eyes starts before birth!

Did you know that going smoke-free during pregnancy is one of the best ways to safeguard your baby's vision? Smoking increases the risk of premature birth—which can lead to permanent vision loss—and raises the risk of severe infections like bacterial meningitis by 5x.

Did you know that 1 in 5 young children experience farsightedness (hyperopia)?

When a child has hyperopia, distant objects look clear, but close-up things—like books or building blocks—can appear blurry. If left untreated, it can make learning to read harder than it needs to be.
The good news? It's easily corrected with glasses.

When little learners are free to safely explore, their minds and vision thrive together. A quick childproofing check makes all the difference.

Keep cleaning supplies, detergents, and sharp tools tucked safely away out of little hands’ reach to protect growing eyes from accidental injury.

We couldn’t agree more! Up to 80% of learning in a child's early years happens visually, making early detection through simple screenings one of the most powerful tools we have for student success.

Thanks to BHHS Legacy Foundation and the talented optometry students from Midwestern University for stepping up for our community at your Backpack Buddies event last week! Your teamwork and dedication are helping so many Arizona students start the school year off on the right foot.

Quick, simple vision screenings like this one are a total game-changer for classroom success.
