How did the Roman army conquer the world? Not just with swords, but with revolutionary logistics and transportation!

Rome shaped the history of engineering by building vast road networks and leveraging water routes to move bulk food fast and cheap. With soldiers carrying weeks of rations, backed by pack mules and strategic supply depots, their supply chain was unmatched.

Conquer the Eighth Wonder of the World! Tracing the ancient Silk Road, the Karakoram Highway stands as a monumental milestone in the history of engineering. This treacherous international transportation link crosses the 15,397-ft Khunjerab Pass, demanding peak performance from heavy-duty trucks and powerful diesel engines. From pioneering supply chain logistics to conquering high-altitude geohazards, discover how brute mechanical force and human grit revolutionized global trade infrastructure.

Explore a wild chapter in the history of engineering and maritime transportation: the SS Great Eastern. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1858, this 18,000-ton titan disrupted shipping logistics—it was literally too big for the ports of its time! From a fatal boiler explosion to eerie legends of workers trapped in its double hull, its legacy is as cursed as it is groundbreaking. Yet, it changed global logistics by laying the transatlantic cable.

Meet the massive 1.8-mile Mauritania Railway, a desert titan weighing as much as 156 million Filet-O-Fish sandwiches! This monster train battles 120°F heat, endless sand, and warped “sun kinks” to haul iron ore across 430 miles of the deep Sahara. Generating a huge 9% of Mauritania’s GDP, it’s a vital economic lifeline where brave locals regularly hitch a highly perilous, intense ride right on top of the moving cargo.

Day 3 is a wrap, and so is this year’s Diesel Connect! After a hearty breakfast, attendees returned to a half-day of heavy-duty awesomeness. Cash flow, brand-building, and even a deep dive into preventive maintenance were on offer, along with an excellent presentation on recruiting the next generation of technicians.

Last — but certainly not least — we got to sit down with a panel of experienced shop owners from all over the country who told us their stories and answered questions. What’s the secret to running a successful operation? Hard work helps, but communication REALLY helps.

(So does coffee. Our attendees would agree, as they helped us go through 199 gallons of it in THREE DAYS. 199! Gallons! Of coffee!)

It was a great few days, and we’re looking forward to doing it again next year. Block your calendar for May 18-20, 2027 — we’ll see you there.

Crazy history! In 1904, Russia built a temporary railroad directly over frozen Lake Baikal. It failed fast when a massive locomotive broke through the ice and sank a mile down! To move equipment across the 45-mile Siberian gap, thousands of horses had to drag dismantled engines. Locomotive tech has evolved, but extreme conditions still test heavy machinery. Whether it’s a cold-weather breakdown or routine automotive maintenance, we provide the expert diesel repair your engine needs.

What’s better than a day of diesel industry awesomeness? TWO days of diesel industry awesomeness. We started earlier this morning — 9 AM on the dot — and got a rundown on the state of the diesel industry from ATRI’s Dr. Alex Leslie. From there, the heavy-duty pros had their choice of seminars and workshops to attend; some learned how rising costs and hidden revenue leaks were draining profits, while others realized they should be marketing to both customers AND potential techs.

Attendees learned new ways to build accountability in their shops from Dave Anderson (pro tip: “Ambiguity is the enemy of accountability.”). They also figured out what happens when shops work with each other (instead of against), and even talked about when it might be time to put the biz up for sale.

Oh, yeah, and the food was amazing.

What’s going down on Day 3? Wait and see…
