The SEPTA Transit Police Department was created in 1981 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly. It is the 5th largest police department in Pennsylvania.

Since 1981, SEPTA's Transit Police Department has been working to provide riders with a safe and secure travel environment, while also protecting Authority property and personnel. With about 260 sworn personnel, the Transit Police are responsible for SEPTA's 2,200 square-mile service region, including over 100 stations on the Market-Frankford, Broad Street, and Regional Rail Lines. Please send your prayers of peace to the family of our fallen brother, Erik Gustafson. May he rest in peace. Erik was a SEPTA Transit Police Officer who went on to be a proud and caring Atlantic County New Jersey Sheriffs Deputy.
