It really is true: a little child will lead them. This is the younger of our two grandsons: Jesse. And he is a Jesse!

Dr. Dan Allander wrote a wonderful book called “How Children Raise Parents.” I read it when my two boys were young. I loved it.

Now here are these two little grandsons, simply by being who they are, leading Cam and me, and their mom and dad through the desert. By God’s infinite wisdom and loving kindness, leading us through and raising us up.

Two sons. Two grandsons.

For mothers everywhere:
Peace to you this Mother’s Day.

One of my favorite phrases to my sons, David and Aaron as they grew from infancy to boyhood to adolescence to adulthood was this:
“I can’t believe I get to be your mom.”

What an honor. What a pure gift from on high that anyone, anywhere should get to be a mother.

No matter what you have suffered, dear woman, no matter what you have faced being a mom, I am praying at this very moment that peace would be yours. 💔❤️‍🩹❤️💔❤️‍🩹❤️

What do you get when a phenomenal member of the family- my firstborn son- dies of colon cancer at age 28 and his brother, sister-in-law, mother and father live on here on planet Earth?

You get remembrance. You get passion and love and sorrow over the FIVE YEARS TODAY all blended in. We’ll be posting likely a number of things today.
(Five years is such a milestone.)
But let’s start with my darling Aaron, Dave’s younger, and one and only sibling.

I adore you, Aaron, my gorgeous son. I love what you and David had and still have. I love how you have chronicled your grief and our family story of this grief journey in your extraordinary music.

Thank you, my son. Thank you, Lord for my beautiful boys.💔❤️‍🩹💔❤️‍🩹

Garden of Gravity: Sleep is out now from the link in my bio. This project is for my brother, Dave, who passed from colon cancer 5 years ago at the age of 28. A note to Dave: Five years, brother. What have they been for you? I deeply hope something far beyond what we’d predicted, but at the very least I hope you’ve had five years of painless peace. Over here, life has kept moving me. Often against, though at times with, my will. There’s even been beauty and good, somehow, since you left. I became a dad and you became an uncle. The boys know you and have been asking about you. I see flickers of you in each of them, and us in both of them. It’s also been five years of sowing, toiling and waiting in what I’ve come to call my garden of gravity. Trying, from some combination of adoration and desperation, to hold onto something that’s not there. To keep you here in some way that’s more meaningful and true than dusty and convenient memories. So I promised you a gift that we’d begin opening today. The first part of my garden is about where we both went on May 1, 2021 - to sleep. It’s about the nail in my foot, softened joy, and heightened grief. Our severed age gap, faded colors, and glimmers of rich, cobalt blue. I don’t know what happened when you closed your eyes, but these 6 songs are where I went when I closed mine. And a huge thank you and recognition to Jake Neumar for gifting his time and expertise to help produce this, to my wife, Rachel, for the album art work and visuals, and to the many family and friends who have listened and help to refine these songs over the last few years. I’m immensely grateful.

This beautiful woman - Asal Sayas- has died.

Asal and our son David are two young extraordinary people who met through their mutual diagnosis of colon cancer. 

The two built a nonprofit together, shared health information, and a love of life.

Since David’s passing five years ago this May 1, Asal has become a dear, dear friend of Cam’s and mine. We love her deeply.

Beautiful woman, like with David, we will deeply miss you. We already do. 

After a valiant battle with cancer, we lost my former staffer Asal Sayas. She had many friends and admirers, including me.

While battling her own cancer, she worked on President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot to expand access to clinical trials.

My heart is with her loved ones.

Celebrating life! This is how we do it in our home.

I could barely contain myself today at a baby shower for our one dear friends’ daughter- Mckenzie (about to have baby number three), and attended by our other dear friends’ daughter, Cara (18 weeks pregnant with baby number one). I just looked at them both and felt so moved. Weren’t these beautiful women little girls a minute ago?

And aren’t they gorgeous?!

We love to celebrate with our friends! we love to celebrate life.

Strong.
Fun.
Bright.
Gentle.
Gracious.
Sassy.
I just love her.

I love that she married our son, Aaron.
I love that she gets to be the mother of two sons. I love that she loves her family of origin so well. I love that she loves us, too.

This is a cheers to you, dear one. Just ‘cuz. 💋
