📽️Calling all film fans, the Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival is bringing stories of culture, community and connection to screens across the city this summer!
Now in its 9th year, PHLAFF runs from May 24 to July 5, showcasing a diverse lineup of films that uplift Latino voices across the diaspora. For Chief Curator & Director, Marángeli Mejía-Rabell, the festival is more than film, but rather a space to cultivate the “cultural responsibility to live” and “celebrate each other.”
With Latinos making up 16.4% of Philadelphia’s population, PHLAFF reflects legacies evolving in real time– perpetuated by the desire to incite collaboration and cultural understanding among the masses.
From tragic romance to colorful animation, the festival highlights the efforts of Latino artists that deserve to be seen and celebrated on a widespread scale.

Like many new graduates, Hispanics and Latinos face job market challenges while navigating the ongoing pressure of student loan repayment.
According to the Student Borrower Protection Center, “Black and Latinx students are more likely to take on student debt. 90% of Black and 72% Latinx students take out loans to attend college in comparison to 66% of white students. While the underrepresented group takes on more debt, the study found that the 90% (group) is five times more likely to fall behind.”

📝Meet José Ortiz-Pagán, a recent recipient of the prestigious Pew Arts Grant.
He learned the news on an otherwise ordinary day. While shopping with his family at Walmart, he checked his phone and found an email announcing that he was one of just 12 Philadelphia artists selected to receive $85,000 in unrestricted funding.
The moment felt so surreal that he spent nearly half an hour wandering the aisles in disbelief.
Ortiz-Pagán has long been involved with community organizations such as Taller Puertorriqueño and Fleisher Art Memorial, grounding both his artistic and spiritual practice in communities like Fairhill and Kensington.
His work has been featured in major exhibitions including the San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial, the Taiwan International Print Biennial, the Bronx Latin American Art Biennial, and his solo exhibition “Umbral” at the Berman Museum.
