At first glance, it’s hard to believe that the Dawn Redwood is actually a living fossil.
The last living species of the genus Metasequoia was thought to be extinct until the early 1940s when it was rediscovered in central China. However, this fast-growing, deciduous tree is still endangered in its wild range due to deforestation.
We like to use the fallen needles from the Dawn Redwood as an autumn mulch in garden beds 🍂

These aren’t popcorn or candy, so don’t eat them! They are scale insects, a common garden pest. The females (pictured here) stay put on stems and produce eggs under their marshmallowy covering. We like to manage scale insects by simply picking them off the plant.
