Michael R. Galvan
Candidate for Philadelphia City Council At-Large
Today, five members of Philadelphia City Council introduced legislation that would prohibit Safe Injection Sites in their districts. Many of these districts are high need districts for recovery services from the opioid epidemic we're experiencing.
As a person in recovery, I am hurt, angry, and shocked that our elected officials are buckling to outside pressures and not leading with compassion.
People with substance use disorder are still people.
Shutting the door to a proven, effective method of recovery will cost countless lives in our City. We must use every proven avenue of recovery to support our neighbors, and the legislation proposed today will take us numerous steps backwards in our efforts.

Let’s start talking policy:
Good policy:
1. Centers the collective voices of individuals with lived experience
2. Offers clear steps on implementing reforms for all
3. Follows a clear, concise framework that is accessible to all
Good policy matters now more than ever. is at a crossroads for progressive policy and we have the opportunity to create positive policy together that will end the cycle of generational poverty caused by racist, classist, systemic barriers to BIPOC communities.
Our next members of and have the opportunity to govern with progressive policies that will benefit all.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll begin to dive into individual policy proposals with a weekly post that discusses policy solutions proposed by our Council and Mayoral candidates!

Last week, we released our first policy proposal “Housing for All”!
We put together a TL;DR on the housing proposal for you to review here!
Our City is in a housing crisis. Homelessness, housing insecurity, displacement and a lack of affordable options are creating inequities in our city.
We must prioritize a Housing First strategy to ensure we use every available option to ensure Housing For All.
