Opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary pioneered the revolutionary Pennsylvania System, where prisoners lived in complete solitary confinement as a form of rehabilitation. Its unique radial design influenced the construction of more than 300 prisons worldwide, and it later housed infamous inmates like Al Capone before closing in 1971.
