I’ll add a few attachment points towards the top to hold a handle. Maybe a rope-type, so it’ll fall to the side, rather than resting on the top?

I love sharing this part of the process because these butter dishes are still becoming what they’ll eventually be — useful, handmade objects meant for slow breakfasts and warm bread.

A few are available on the website now, and I’m excited to see this next batch come out of the kiln in the next couple weeks. 🔥👀

Trimming feet🦶🏼

The subtractive part of the process. The clay’s at the perfect moisture level to carve away smoothly. Sharp tools make it even smoother. This finishing step is when the piece comes to life and reveals what the final form will look like.

I’m typically pretty meticulous in this step, but I recently heard Monsoon Pottery speak at Ball State University and now I find myself searching for where I can be more efficient. I’ve never asked myself the question, “how many pots can I make in a month?”, but now I need to know.🤨

Leaving a mark

I sat down to throw a dozen of these “thumblers” last night. I tried to keep them fast and loose, mainly focusing on efficiency of movements as I prepare for a big ol’ commission.

That simple impression makes these fit in your hand so comfortably. And those gestural spirals will give some drippy glaze a nice path to settle into as they get finished up.
