AI excels at research and estimations, like electrician costs. However, it struggles with creative tasks like art generation. If an AI can't improve your writing, that's a good sign you're doing well.
Generative AI is here. But are we using it like a Terminator, an inevitability, or a tool? Learn how to wield AI wisely, empower your team, and protect your data.

Every experienced engineer has a comfort zone: the systems, tools, and methods that have worked reliably for years. But when does familiarity stop being an advantage and start becoming a constraint? This article explores how radio engineers can modernize thoughtfully without discarding the hard-earned judgment that got them here.
The Technology That Never Failed You May Still Be Holding You Back One of the most durable pieces of equipment in a radio station’s technical plant may be the 950 MHz studio-to-transmitter link.

For FM RBDS/RDS injection, 6% is the usual U.S. target — about 4.5 kHz deviation of the 57 kHz subcarrier, based on 75 kHz = 100% modulation. In practice, 5–6% is a good working range, with 7% generally about the upper end unless you have a specific reason and you’re watching total modulation carefully. Best practice: verify it with a calibrated FM modulation monitor that can measure RBDS/RDS injection off-air or at the transmitter output.
Engineer question: How are you checking RBDS injection at your stations — modulation monitor, spectrum display, receiver/error-rate testing, or something else?
MK Technical can install, inspect, and maintain your critical on-air systems, including RDS/RBDS.

We need temperature awareness for remote sites, especially when HVAC problems can quickly turn into off-air problems. The best approach is a temperature sensor tied into your remote control or monitoring system, with alarms for high or low temperature conditions. But even a simple backup method can help: install an inexpensive indoor security camera and point it at a large wall thermometer. A big round thermometer from a discount store will cost under $20, and while it won’t send an alarm, it lets you check site temperature anytime you have internet access. MK Technical Service can upgrade and confgure both new and most existing remote control systems for monitoring temperature and many other parameters. What simple, low-cost monitoring tricks have saved you from a transmitter-site surprise?

Outdoor CAT5, CAT5e, and CAT6 cable can be easy to overlook—right up until it becomes the reason your transmitter site goes silent. Even outdoor-rated category cable can be damaged by weather, water intrusion, animals, tower crews, boots, tools, or equipment brushing past it. A quick visual inspection can reveal cracked jackets, nicks, bad drip loops, loose supports, UV damage, or connectors that may already be inviting moisture inside. Ideally, cable performance was documented when installed so it can be compared later—but even without that baseline, regular inspection is far better than deferred maintenance becoming an outage. MK Technical can install, inspect, and maintain your critical on-air systems. So, what do YOU watch for with outdoor category cable, and what interesting failures have you had to troubleshoot?
