Meet Kyle Miller, Ph.D.—one of the brilliant minds behind our R&D team!
Kyle works on advancing high-performance computing for our optical design software, helping make simulations faster and more powerful. Before joining us, Kyle developed cutting-edge algorithms to model complex laser and plasma interactions—some with speed improvements of over 1000×!
Outside of work, Kyle is a musician (saxophone, clarinet, and piano 🎷), enjoys basketball, board games, and spending time with family.

Great to be part of Rochester Optical Design Day at the University of Rochester last month on May 18.
Optical designers and engineers at the event focused on practical challenges and emerging opportunities in optical system design. We covered:
- What’s new in CODE V, including the Accelerated Custom Tolerancing (usertol) capability
- Insights and real-world perspectives from our Optical Engineering Services team
- Recent updates across LightTools, ImSym, RSoft, and VisionSym
Most valuable was the dialogue—hearing how teams are approaching system-level complexity, tolerancing workflows, and integration across optical and photonic design environments.
Thanks to everyone who joined the event and spent time connecting with us. Events like this reinforce how important it is to bring the community together to exchange ideas and push the field forward.

📘Good read for anyone working with imaging systems: Modeling the Imaging Chain of Digital Cameras by Brian Fiete (SPIE)
This book is a great reminder that an optical system is more than just the lens. While a lot of time is usually spent optimizing optics, other parts of the system—like the detector or signal processing—can end up being the real performance bottleneck.
It does a nice job walking through the full imaging chain, from scene radiometry all the way to data processing, and explains how each stage affects the final image. Very practical, very systems‑level thinking.
A solid recommendation for anyone in optics who wants to better understand how real imaging systems behave end to end. 👌Recommended by our optical engineers on staff.
