First UMC Park Ridge

Sunday Night Suppers filled Jorgeson Hall on September 20, our first evening of the fall as the host team. Park Ridge Community Church came as the sponsor group and provided the meal.

A sincere word of thanks to everyone who gave a Sunday evening to this, and to our friends at Park Ridge Community Church for sharing a meal with our neighbors.

A free meal is served at First UMC every Sunday from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, no questions asked.

Take an autumn stroll for a great cause. First UMC of Park Ridge is walking in the 35th annual Niles-Park Ridge CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 18, so come join our team or sponsor a walker.

Registration opens at 1:15 pm at Park Ridge Community Church, 100 Courtland Ave., with step-off at 2:00 pm; the three-mile route brings everyone back by about 4:00 pm. There is no cost to walk, since you can register when you arrive or sign up ahead on our team page.

Proceeds benefit Church World Service and the Maine Township Emergency Food Pantry. Our congregation gave $2,200 last year, and we would love to match that this fall.

This Sunday, Pastor Scott Himel preaches "Ubuntu" (Matthew 20:1-16), the parable of a landowner who pays the worker hired at five o'clock exactly what he pays the one who has been in the vineyard since dawn. We'll sit with that story alongside a word Desmond Tutu spent his life teaching: my well-being is wrapped up in your well-being, since a person is a person only through other persons.

Our ministries and committees filled Jorgeson Hall right after worship on Sunday, September 13, each with a table staffed by the people who already serve on it. The turnout was wonderful, and members signed up for new places to serve and new people to get to know.

This Sunday, Pastor Scott brings our "Faith in Uncertain Times" series to its close with "Anchored Hope" (Romans 5:1-5; Hebrews 6:13-20). Hebrews calls our hope "a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul," an image the earliest Christians took so to heart that they carved anchors into the catacomb walls where they buried their dead. When we put our faith in Christ, hope takes on real weight; it holds the boat steady when the sea turns rough.

Neighbors gathered outside Park Ridge City Hall this morning as the City marked the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. We remembered the lives that were lost; we honored the courage and sacrifice of the first responders.

The Rotary Club of Park Ridge then dedicated a new Peace Pole a few steps away in Hodges Park. Randall Blair, a member of First UMC and this year's Rotary president, began the ceremony; Pastor Bob Campbell of First UMC offered a reflection on peace. The eight-foot pole carries the words "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in eight languages and in Braille — a statement of hope that countries around the world will keep working for peace.

Thank you to everyone who made this year's United Women in Faith Rummage Sale such a success! This was not our largest sale, but we did really well; the total so far is $5,118, which includes a generous anonymous donation given specifically to support the sale.

Our thanks to everyone who donated our abundance of items, to the many people who worked throughout the week and stayed until every last remnant was boxed, and to our customers. Our thanks go as well to everyone whose yard carried one of our signs.

Every dollar supports United Women in Faith's programs for women, children and youth, both here in Park Ridge and around the world.

This Sunday, Pastor Scott Himel continues our series "Faith in Uncertain Times" with "Fear Not" (Isaiah 40:27–41:10). Isaiah speaks to an exiled people who are frightened of what comes next, and God's answer isn't that the danger is imaginary; it's a promise worth learning by heart: "Do not fear, for I am with you."

Doors are open. The United Women in Faith Rummage Sale runs today and tomorrow, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, in Jorgeson Hall and the Parlor at First UMC.

A croquet set and a birdcage are waiting, along with books, clothing, household items, toys and treasures galore. Furniture will not be available this year.
