Today is the anniversary of National Liberation Day of Korea or Korean Independence Day. It commemorates the day when Korea was liberated from 35 years of Japanese colonization. During that time, families were murdered, homes were destroyed or taken. People were forced to take on Japanese names, losing their identities. Men were forced to fight on the frontlines for Japan and sent to work in Japanese factories. Women were forced to be "Comfort Women" for Japanese soldiers. Koreans experienced tremendous suffering.

Today, I had the opportunity to attend a Korean Independence day celebration and flag raising ceremony here in Bergen County. Reflecting back on my upbringing, we as a community have made much progress. Although there's still work to be done, today I'm reminded of how blessed I am to be living in Paramus and part of a wonderful, diverse Bergen County community.

Happy Independence Day!
I hope you're having a wonderful day with your loved ones celebrating our freedoms and the many things that make our nation special. On days like today, I'm reminded of how blessed I am to live in this country and to never take for granted the "simple" things like sharing a wonderful moment with neighbors watching the annual parade to breaking bread with family and friends at a bbq. If you have a moment, let's remember that the freedoms we enjoy were paid for by the sacrifices of others. Our freedom was and is never free. Stay safe and Happy 4th!

Just got back from tonight's Board of Education meeting. It's 12:30am. We started at 6:30pm. This is starting to become the norm. I just wanted to thank my fellow board members for their commitment and dedication. They all have families and lead extremely busy lives, and despite the likelihood that they will be tired tomorrow (today), they give their time because they care. As with many meetings, I witnessed that tonight. Although our discussions and debate can get intense sometimes, one thing is clear: they want the children/students of Paramus to succeed.

As you may know, tomorrow is the National Day of Prayer. I will be outside Paramus Borough Hall tomorrow at 3pm to pray for the education of our students, our leaders and elected officials, our first responders and the families in Paramus and across our state & nation. I know this is late notice, but if you have some time and would like to join me, please do. It would be great to see you.

During tonight's public session, a group of high school students shared their concerns and displeasure of not being able to partake in certain AP classes simply because there was not enough demand from the student population to justify offering the courses. Although it was disheartening to hear that these students, who clearly are concerned about their future and want to learn, are not able to do so because the school won't give them their classes, I was pleasantly surprised at their ability to articulate their concerns to the Administration and the Board in a well-spoken and persuasive manner. Their passion was evident. Press on guys... schedule your meetings with the Superintendent and let's find a way!
