They always look good until you dig a little deeper. Roof had soft spots. The skylight had been repaired but the rotted spot was still inside.

Don’t get caught with thousands of dollars in damage you will have to pay to repair it.

Know the RV’s Weight & Your Tow Vehicle Limits

If buying a towable:

Check the GVWR

Know your truck’s towing capacity

Don’t rely on the dealership, “it’ll tow fine.”

Overweight towing is unsafe and damages vehicles.

Look at Storage Compartments

Open every compartment.

Check for water stains

Smell for mildew

Inspect door latches & locks

Look for soft flooring inside compartments

Storage areas often reveal hidden water intrusion first.

Check the A/C and Heating Under Load

Let the A/C run at least 15 minutes.

Is it blowing cold air?

Any loud rattling?

Does the thermostat respond properly?

Climate control failures are common in used RVs.

Inspect Seals Around Windows & Doors

Look for:

Cracked or dried caulking

Gaps in rubber seals

Foggy dual-pane windows

Foggy windows = broken seal = expensive fix.

Test All Appliances (Individually)

Turn everything on:

Refrigerator (gas & electric, if dual-mode). I had one yesterday that would not work on propane.

Furnace

A/C unit

Water heater

Stove & oven

RV refrigerators alone can cost $1,500–$3,000 to replace.

Verify the VIN & Title

Before you fall in love with it:

Make sure the VIN matches the title

Confirm it’s not salvaged (unless you’re aware)

Check for outstanding liens

Paperwork problems can delay or completely block ownership transfer.
