The Oak Ridge History Museum is located in the historic Midtown Community Center, one of America's few surviving Manhattan Project structures, and features exhibits and artifacts of early Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Buses in Oak Ridge numbered nearly 350, with an additional 400 buses operating off the area to carry non-residents workers to the job site. From July 1944 through June 1945 the on-area buses carried 22,252,479 passengers. During June 1945 they carried 22,401,070 passengers.

The area for The Manhattan Project that General Groves selected in Anderson and Roane Counties in Tennessee (September 1942) was first called The Kingston Demolition Range. Groves said that name sounded too suspicious, so the name Clinton Engineer Works (CEW) was selected because the town of Clinton was located nearby. It finally was named Oak Ridge.

Did You Know?

Around 55,000 rail cars of material and equipment were shipped to the Oak Ridge site from November 1942 through June 1945. More than 300 miles of roads were built or improved in the area. Around 55 miles of railroad were built.
