Milner Library is an active partner in the teaching, learning, research, and service activities of Illinois State University.

Milner Library, located in the heart of campus, is an active partner in the teaching, learning, and research activities of Illinois State University. Students have access to spaces for group work and individual study, printing, multimedia development rooms, and technology to check out such as laptops, graphing calculators, and digital cameras. Every student is assigned a personal librarian, who can provide individualized guidance with research projects. Additionally, students can get help through instant messaging, text, and e-mail via our “Ask a Librarian” service. Milner Library has textbooks and other class readings for specific courses available for in-library use, as well as ample information resources and books to support all levels of research projects.

Milner Library is celebrating 50 years in our current location, and we’re celebrating by throwing it back to 1976. Join us this Wednesday, October 7 from 4-6 p.m. for a 70s themed celebration, featuring a scavenger hunt, snacks, pet rocks (did you know those debuted in the 70s?), a photo station, and more. Grab a disco ball, an exclusive Milner 50th anniversary sticker, and other fun prizes. 1970s costumes extremely encouraged!

“Most students with low vision or blindness are already connected with external organizations that help them learn to navigate campus before they arrive,” Harman said. “Since we have the tools and technology available here, I wanted to find a way to make that transition even easier.”

Harman initially explored using a Braille conversion machine to create a tactile map. However, the amount of Braille required to represent campus locations made the map poor in quality and difficult to use. Seeking a more practical solution, he turned to Touch Mapper, a platform that creates tactile maps designed specifically for people with visual impairments.

After extensive rounds and editing, Harman developed a scaled campus map in Braille that could easily and accurately be explored through touch. He then partnered with colleague Steve Koehler at Milner Library’s Innovation Hub to bring the project to life through three-dimensional printing.
