How much of this history did you know?

One of America's largest religious denominations traces its roots to a single log cabin in rural Missouri.

In 1839, a group of German Lutheran immigrants, many of them Saxons who had crossed the Atlantic seeking the freedom to practice confessional Lutheranism without state interference, settled in Altenburg, in Perry County. They built a small log cabin to serve as a school for training ministers, an institution modest enough that it earned the nickname "the Log Cabin College."

Among the group was a young pastor barely out of his twenties named C.F.W. Walther, who had led part of the Saxon migration to America. Walther would go on to become one of the most influential Lutheran theologians in American history, and the seminary he helped shape would become the academic and institutional core of an entire church body that still bears his adopted state's name.

In 1847, twelve pastors representing fourteen congregations across Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Michigan, New York, and Ohio gathered in Chicago and signed the constitution founding what they called the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. Walther served as its first president, holding the office across two separate terms before his death in 1887. A century later, in 1947, the organization shortened its name to what it's still called today: the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, one of the largest Lutheran bodies in the United States.

The seminary itself kept moving as the church grew. In 1849, the school relocated from its original log cabin in Perry County to St. Louis, settling on South Jefferson Avenue. Its preparatory division split off to Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1861. By 1926, the seminary had outgrown its city campus entirely and moved to its current 72-acre site in suburban Clayton, where it still operates today, having trained more than 12,000 pastors, missionaries, and church leaders over nearly two centuries.

A national religious movement, one still shaping congregations across the country nearly two centuries later, began with a handful of immigrants and a log cabin classroom in rural Missouri.

Had you heard that an entire national church body traces back to a small town in Perry County?

Ministry is a marathon, not a sprint. For our faithful church workers, the greatest forms of encouragement — and the most heartfelt displays of appreciation — come from the very people God has called them to serve. With the help of congregations across the country, we have compiled a list of church worker appreciation ideas that we hope will spur each congregation to recognize its own called workers in at least one new way. Oct. 11 is Pastor Appreciation. Oct. 25 is Deaconess, Director of Family Life Ministry, Director of Christian Outreach, and Director of Church Ministries Appreciation.

Tonight was our Fall Porch Pot Class, sponsored by Casey's Garden Shop and Florist! More than 20 people showed up, 15 porch pots were created, and thankfully, no one went home empty-handed—or hungry!

After putting our green thumbs to work, we enjoyed some good fellowship and made s’mores. Because apparently, creating porch pots works up an appetite for melted chocolate and toasted marshmallows.

A great evening was had by all!

Christ Lutheran at The Corn Crib this evening! A little smokey (from the wildfires) but not horrible. It's a beautiful evening for some baseball!

Today we celebrated and gave thanks to God for Patty and her 30 years of faithful service as organist and music director at Christ Lutheran Church!

Since 1996, Patty has been at the forefront of leading God's people in making a joyful noise to the Lord. She has faithfully played the organ and piano, directed adult and youth choirs, led handbell choirs, accompanied countless instrumentalists, and taught piano and organ to many students over the years.

We are truly blessed by Patty's faithful service to Christ and His Church. We thank God for the many gifts He has given her and for the countless ways she has enriched our worship for three decades. May the Lord continue to bless her as she serves Him with joy.

Soli Deo Gloria!
